Only my opinion - although I've been sweeping flues for years.......!
Use 12mm nylon rods, 1m length - the threads are 1/2" BSW. Drain rods aren't for you!
Always twist clockwise :confused:
Choose a brush slightly smaller than your 8" one, but get a 8" and maybe a bigger one too. Use the small one first to check for any obstructions - although there shouldn't be any on a cast flue.
I prefer nylon bristles on a brush but most of my flues have SS liners.
I don't advise using a flail type - they have been known to disconnect even when used as per instructions.
If there is a cowl on top, don't dislodge it! Have someone standing by to see when the brush appears and count the number of rods used for the future.
I use 2 powerful HEPA vacuums with double filters (Ryobi as it happens) and the mess is minimal.
