Hi

Just wondered if anyone can help. I run a school where lights are constantly left on in classrooms, etc. by students (and staff!) thereby wasting a lot of energy.

A short while ago I asked an electrician to wire in 1 x PIR occupancy detector in the middle of the ceiling to the fluorescent lights in one of our classrooms as a trial. This worked fine as long as people were moving in the classroom. However, when students were doing tests and there was very little movement in the room the lights switched off after the end of the time set on the PIR (around 10 minutes). This was rather annoying and disruptive as the students/teacher had to wave their arms so that the lights would come on again.

Does anyone have a solution to the problem of keeping lights on while people are in a room (even if there is very little movement)? The key thing is that the lights have to go off after the students/staff have left the room to save energy.

Would wiring more than one PIR into the circuit help? Any diagrams would be really appreciated.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Microwave detection is far more sensitive and covers larger areas.

Also take a look for "absence detectors" rather then "occupancy detectors".
