wiring switches

i need to wire a light switch, 2 switches on one plate, is this a two way?? i need an idiots guide on how to wire it up. The switch is to control 2 wall lights!!

thanx for your reply but i have a normal 3 wire supply from the socket brown,blue yellow/green, and a brown and blue wire for each light (x2) how do i wire this up to a 2 way switch??

If you can not understand how to do it after looking at for refernce is suggest you are not competant to do the job and that you get some one else to do it for you.

This is not a good combination of things.

Do you know the difference between Live, Neutral and Earth, and what a switch does?

It sounds like you want to connect two wall lights to a surface mounted two gang light switch then take a three core wire from this and plug it into a socket (3 amp fuse in the plug). That's unconventional to say the least but safe if you can find a way of clamping the wires' outer sheaths inside your switch box (which won't be easy).

Alternatively, is that three core wire taken straight into the back of the socket? You can't do that. The socket will be on a 30 amp fuse and that's far too big to protect your wall light wires which are probably only 3 amp rated.

You have only two core wires coming from your lights. That's OK if the lights are class two (double insulated). If they are they will have the class two symbol stamped on them somewhere. Look for a square with a smaller one inside. There will also be nowhere to attach an earth wire.

If all of the above is in order the switch wiring goes like this:

Each switch will have a terminal marked COM, or maybe just C, and two others on the opposite side marked (probably) L1 and L2. You connect your incoming brown wire to both COM's and the outgoing brown wires to the L1's. All three blue wires go together in a piece of choc block. The green/yellow wire goes on its own in another choc block. If the switch works 'upside down' to what you are used to move the outgoing brown wires to the L2's.

Fair comment from Breezer and I did consider it. I also considered the possibility that Richard b would read all the negative comments, say "useless t***ers" and do the job anyway but with information acquired from behind the bike sheds. The fact that he bothered to post on the forum at all is promising.
