This isn't particularly new technology, there are a few companies (POWERMAT being one) that have been working on this.
Powermat are already in negotiations with major manufacturers to install coupling devices for this such purpose.
Powermat have also created a cutable mat that can be embeded in just about any surface, so that any unit requiring power 'hand-shakes' with the mat and draws the power required using the basic principle of induction.
There are plans for some of the houses in the New Towns to have this technology installed, the makers claim that it will have great benefits for energy efficientcy because through constant monitoring if a device is not in use it disconnects completely taking away the standby uses of items such as TV's etc.
Also installing lighting etc means you can quite literally move the lights where you want, change the fitting what ever.
Even a tightly coupled inductive transfer of power is only around 98% efficient. That being in a well designed wound transformer.
A pair of loosely coupled coils are never going to achieve efficient ( as in low wastage ) coupling of power.
So the advantage of not having to plug in a charger will be out weighed by the wastage of electrical power but then that will be outweighed by the glitzy appeal of the latest Techno no no being on the desk.
Not sure what if any effect the magnetic field would have on a wrist watch.
One of the first things that would have ( may still happen ) in a big war is a high altitude nuclear detonation designed to create a very powerful electromagnetic pulse to fry all the enemies electronic and electrical systems. Reducing in scale the power level on the desk that is food for the mobile phone may be toxic overload for the wrist watch and don't even think about an implanted pace maker.
