Just swept a chimney -from a Stanley range cooker (for my sins).
The folks involved are prone to burning wet timber, and keeping the fire damped down which gives heavy resin deposits in the flue.
Since the last time, they've been regularly dosing the fuel with Stovax Protector - and much to my amazement the resin has gone, and largely turned to clinker.....which came tumbling down the chimney very readily!
Worth knowing about, methinks - its got to help a chimney fire situation.

Q...Bm, is it possible they were burning a high resin wood such as leylandii/pine that caused the resin build up because I would have thought that water would have got turned in to steam.?

I think like most folks they'll burn anything thats cheap.....however they can't seem to grasp that the flue temperature needs to be high ( between 200 and 300 deg c) to prevent resin and creosote formation.
Thats probably why I have to sweep 4 times a year!
I was impressed with this product though, although I've no idea what it is chemically.
