What's the best kind of wood filler to fill all of the redundant shelf holes, I'm steering towards Toupret wood filler as it's a trusted brand and I've used Toupret before albeit on a wall https://www.toolstation.com/toupret-wood-repair-filler/p10260 I'll be painting over them at the end, Zinsser have recommended their Bullseye 123 primer then I'll finish in a satinwood.

OK thanks, I've not come across that before, is there any reason not to use a normal wood filler? The plastic plugs look rubbish, this will be part of a wider project joining five bookcases together and then hiding the fact that their Billy bookcases! So quite a few holes to fill.

if the holes bother you wouldn't the colour off filler bother you as much ??

Cover the holes by putting large books at each end?
Then you can adjust the shelving to suit the books.

Where does the name, Billy Bookcase come from?

I'll never need to adjust the shelves again, as you would not be able if they were 'joiner built'.

I would go with Tourpet Redlite, or RedDevil Onetime filler.

They are relatively soft so use a sanding block with 180g silicone carbide paper to sand the excess.

Powder based fillers will eventually blow. 2 pack fillers will, in time become slightly proud (but can be sanded back).

I spent many years specialising in painting MDF furniture.

The lightweight fillers such as RedLite were the most forgiving but with the caveats that being so soft, it is easy to sand them too much and leave a slight divot and they have little in the way of impact protection. You can push your finger nail in to the filler, but that is unlikely to happen with a 3-4mm hole.

I haven't used Milliput though.

Thanks, I had already called Toupret who recommended their standard wood readymix over the Redlite, incidentally the Redlite is called Quickfill now. Probably overthinking it now!

You are correct that it is now called Quickfill.

I have never been a fan of the traditional ready mix fillers, they can be a pain to sand. If I am happy to sand extensively, I'd rather use 2 pack filler because it feathers out far better.

I haven't used premix Toupret for years. From memory, they will shrink back slightly, so leave the filler slightly proud. Neither Redlite or 2 pack shrink, but, yeah, you would leave them slightly proud as well. It is pretty much impossible to fill a hole flat. Even with such small holes, you drag the filling knife down, it pulls the filler out slightly.
