Hi

My problem is that when i run the hot tap the boiler fires up, the rad flow gets hot and the DHW pipe only gets warmish. After reading various posts it is likely to be the diverter valve or something associated with that. (please correct me if i'm wrong). On the attached image the motor is operating the mechanical parts i can see and switches from up to down as it should. I'm guessing now that it is something internal like the diaphragm i've also read about. Could anyone provide suggestions regarding this please? Also can i overhaul the diverter, do i need to replace it or can i replace the diaphragm. I have heard its a nightmare to change but i'm happy to have a go.

Thanks for reading

It doesn't have a diaphragm, its just the motor and the paddle.

Thanks for the reply. If its just the motor and paddle then what could it be? The motor is working and the paddle is moving up and down. Does the paddle not move something inside the diverter?

This must be the easiest diverter valve in the world to change, it will probably be **** stuck to the paddle and seating, clean it off all should ge good.

Thanks for the replies. I'll have a go on boxing day.

I guess i should isolate all the pipes and drain the boiler before i try and take it off/out?

Hello again and Merry Christmas

The latest is that i drained the boiler and removed the diverter, which to be honest looked pretty clean (see image) and maybe of no consequence but the water i drained from the boiler was crystal clear. I gave the diverter paddle a wash anyway and replaced it. The motor operates ok and moves the paddle up which would block off the bottom hole (see image). As i didn't have the heating on the paddle was already up but the DHW was still only warm and the flow to the rads (right under the boiler) was quite hot. I don't know if its significant but if i felt the flow pipe a half meter away from the boiler then it was cool which i assume is correct because the heating water isn't getting pumped through at this stage. I've also attached another image which has a ring round something on the LH side of the boiler. Could someone tell me what this is as the pip into the top is red hot (straight from boiler). It may be that this unit feeds into the heat exchanger at the back but if someone could clarify this for me that would be great. Also does anyone have any suggestions for other reasons why this problem could be happening?

Hi the diverter is a Type 1 Motor. It could be the motor that is faulty (even though it appears to be operating correctly). As a boiler is classed as a 'gas fitting', unfortunately I'm not comfortable with giving advice to someone who isn't gsr (whether it's yourself or some other person reading this thread) as testing the motor involves 'work on a gas fitting'. Believe it or not, you even need to be gsr to hang a boiler on the wall. All I will say is that a competent gsr engineer will be able to test the motor. After which (s)he will carry out the relevant tests required to ensure your appliance is operating safely after carrying out work on your appliance. It's entirely possible that the motor may be 100% ok.

Sorry that this may not get you very far in terms of repairing it yourself.

Thanks very much for your reply it is much appreciated. I'm a qualified control systems engineer but do not hold any of the certifications you mention. I would however be able to get the motor tested at work by one of our motor specialists. I'm not sure what you mean by type 1 unless you are referring to the NEMA standard but i may be off track with that one. I'm reluctant to remove the motor for testing just yet as i can visually see its operation and cannot stop it moving to its positions so its got the oomph if you know what i mean. It is however easy to remove so i may just do it to eliminate it from my enquiries. I've still got a gut feeling its a blockage or routing issue, its just knowing where to look.

Thanks again

That was the best answer you are ever going to get, nobody wants to be complicit in you murdering your family or neighbors.

Stop being an idiot and get someone who is knows what they are doing.

This reply is just abusive and you have no right what so ever to call myself or anyone else for that matter 'an idiot' just by reading a few comments on a forum.

I will be reporting this to the moderators.
