Got a call to visit a "no-supply".

There was a good Ze (between L & E) but no N connection at the CU. An "electrician" had changed the CU and cut the seals to the cast-iron cutout & meter. I think (although I did not want to fiddle) that the neutral tail to the meter was open circuit. It is rubber and perishing...

Christ, thats poor, I hate people who upgrade a CU and don't upgrade the tails. (I do stop at harmonising existing tails tho)

I personally refuse to go anywhere near cast iron cutouts anyway, luckily most of the ones I have seen have been supplying a TT system so a PME upgrade was the way to go.

Looks like a job for United Utilities!
Did you call them out, as you know the tails/meter belong to the electricity supplier. The 25mm tails(photo) to the CU are property owners.
The cutout/supply cable belongs to the DNO (also a UU company in Cheshire).
Don't see why the spark did not replace such badly worn tails when he had already cut seals and pulled fuse carrier??

Whats the cost of two 6 inch lengths of 25mm? :?

RF: yes!

NB: Got the customer to call UU while I was there & I spoke to them about the problem.

I thought you would, but just checking.

I reckon it'd start fair crackling with a bit of a nudge

What state was the new consumer unit it? Did it look like it was done by a professional spark or a DIYer who decided to replace it them self? I would never pull a fuse on a case iron cut out and I don't know any spars around here that would. That instantly makes me suspect a DIYer. There is far to much to go wrong.

And if we did chance a CU with a cast iron cut out we would wait for the DNO to come out first fit an isolator and supply them with 25mm2 tales and what ever earthing requirement is required. Last time there was a new PME and nice new tales left for us to work with.

It was a "spark" according to the customer. He did not leave any paperwork, though.
