Has anybody managed to get hold of and install one of those Humax HDR boxes for Freesat? And, if so, are they any good/up to Sky+ box standards and what are the progs on Freesat like?

Not exactly, but I've got a Humax PVR9150T, which is the same sort of thing, but for Freeview, and it is fantastic. Works fine, and seems like a good quality item, plus Freeview has more than enough for my needs.

Only downside is that you will never stumble across a programme again, so the temptation is just to stick with programmes that you know and, in my case, never watch anything but Minder ever again.

The last part of your question. Freesat programmes are freeview programmes plus some more, is this what you were asking.
Freesat is about providing digital tv to areas that cannot receive it by conventional antenna, it is expected that hd will be available using freeview eventually. I have been looking at getting freesat (apparntly the cheapest way to get it, is by having sky installed for 3 months, then taking the freesat).

Yeh, I've got Sky+, but want to get rid of subscription and certainly don't want to pay £10pm for watching HD, if I was to upgrade to an HD box; and I hate Sky anyhow, thieving gypsies that they are (long story).

As I'm surrounded by trees, the terrestial Freeview is pants, to say the least, hence considering the move to Freesat. I know that there are PVR non-HD boxes for Freesat, just wondered what the HD was like?

Sounds good to me...was wondering also about keeping Sky+, but paring down the sub by binning movies, sports and all the other dross "packages", to around £19pm, then getting a Humax HDR for HD stuff via Freesat and switching twixt the two.

I've had that for, ooh, four years or so and watched one football match on it in all that time. Richard Keys alone is enough reason to cancel.

Eurosport/Beeb2 for me MotoGP, that's all I need!

Everything I've ever read states no chance of HD on regular Freeview as not enough bandwidth. If you want (free) HD then Freesat is what you need and indeed is the main attraction, but not really at the mo as there's not much on there yet...

Anyone know when there will be some decent 'proper' Freesat decoders on the market rather than the Happy Shopper brands that appear to have been given the first 'attempt'?

what is a "proper" brand?

If you want a "big name" I expect one will come along soon enough and commision the chinese factory producing equipment wearing 40 different brands to glue their badge to the front, and charge you 50% more, if thats what you want?

I have a dbox2 which gets me plenty of channels ;) . I also have a Humax freesat (not the recorder model) connected to my old sky digital dish and it's fine. I only really use it for the odd HD program on BBCHD and ITV when they show a movie in HD. The stuff on the BBC is pretty good but reasonably infrequent. ITV is once in a blue moon..... having said that, ITV did show the Star Wars movies in HD a short while ago.
HD listings below.... funny enough, ITV don't make it known what they are going to show on HD yet.

The extra-terrestrial TV decoder market has always been dominated by smaller electronic companies, such as Amstrad and Pace, and Thompson.

Both my Grandparents homes have freeview boxes, and both have had problems with the cheap ones.

Such brands as Technosonic (wtf???) churn out cheap rubbish at £10 a pop in th'Asda, but they aren't built to last. It stands to reason that you pay more for quality, hence Sony's attempts to conquer the market have been sunstantially more expensive, at £60-120. But while there are people wanting cheap cr4p, there will be companies willing to give them it and quality brands will struggle to conquer the market.

However, a brand such as Humax is much talked about, therefore must be doing something right with its Freesat recievers. At least they haven't taken the words Technics and Panasonic, and stuck half of each together to pretend to be something they aint. (Wonder if theres a co out there called Panics - the bits Technosonic left behind)

I have a Toshiba TV with a built in Freeview decoder, and it is excellent. Go and buy one.
