The difference in price between fully comp, and third party insurance is really not that great. For peace of mind I would choose fully comp every time.

i have fully comp on the car, and buildings and contents.

my view is, its not the point that you may never use it and pay out lots of money over the years, its there for the "just incase" . if my house collapsed because of subsidence, and i didnt have buildings, it is myself who would have to fork out for a new house or to rebuild my old one.
if i were robbed and my plasma, along with my vintage guitars and amps were stolen, if i did not have contents then it would be me again who would have to buy replacements at my own cost.

if i crashed my car which is worth 3 grand, i would have to spend another 3 grand to replace it or have it mended.

certain things might seem unlikely, but bad things can happen at any time and its nice to know your covered.

you might look back over the years and think "jesus ive spent thousands on insurance i never used" but in my opinion its worth being covered.

and plus, a condition of my mortgage is to have adequate buildings insurance anyhow.

a good example is a work friend of mine,

he swore on not having any insurance where not required, and only the bare minimum where it was required. he always boasted about saving so much money a year. one summer a couple of years back, cracks started to appear in his walls, they got worse every week until one whole outside wall had a crack so big that his son could put his arm through to the outside. The house was condemned as unsafe to inhabit due to subsidence. He lost thousands of pounds as he could not sell the house, he couldnt afford to move, and so he had to have the problems fixed at his own expense. He also had to pay for accomodation for his family whilst the work was being carried out.

other thing to consider is the liability cover an insurance provides

what if your chimney collapsed on top of some one - they can sue and without insurance cover, its going to come out of your own pocket!

Judging by the state of your keyboard, have you anything worth stealing?

Have you ever insured a car?

Do you need buildings insurance for a council house?

Benefits are your insurance.

i just read that old topic and im suprised at it! people dont care to think that its not just them on the road, and they never think that if they have invalid insurance, if THEY hit someone else, then the other person who may only be third party, will have to foot the bill themselves!

There is one school of thought that a claim on the house insurance every few years averages things out for both parties.

I get involved in properties that have had major fires, and many people who don't have insurance lose everything. No-one thinks that it will happen the them, but it does.

It's all about risk.

as for cutting down, im cutting down on things that i dont really need. for example, expensive clothes, food, trying to save a bit of energy where we can etc.

for me the correct insurance is common sense which could save me alot of money one day

im cutting down to on water,i make sure i jump in the shower with the wife. saves time aswell.
