Power flush advised-will it help??-combi boiler-hot water

Its not £900 gob-shyte, so before you start pontificating about BG getting their facts wrong, I suggest you put your own house in order first.... people in glass houses etc

Looked at a job (10 yrs + with BG contract) recently where the pump had failed..........British gas 'engineer' says pump probably failed cus system needs flushing

and was it?

Thanks for replies so far. We live in lancashire and therefore assume it can't be scaled up-am I right in thinking that?

Not really, Ive come across it

Indeed the plate heat exchanger wasn't removed, I presume the system would have to be drained down to do this. As far as I am aware no water sample was checked.

We dont drain a system for removal of a plate to plate, only the boiler.

hmm i would suggest you had better check to see if he was misquoted first. there are engineers quoting for extra labour on top of the PF charge because they have been misinformed by their TSM to do so. probably others who do it just because they think its correct.

Not that hard to find out if it is fouled up or not.
Is the cold spot semi-circular with the top roughly in the middle?
Several if not all of the lower rads same thing?
Don't even need tools for it a lot of the time, just palm of the hand will do. IR thermometer and you can almost draw the line on the rad with a marker.

As for BG calling others cowboys: If I remember correctly, a few years ago they had to withdraw an add that insinuated they were "the real company" and the punters shouldn't let "those story tellers in" or something along those lines.
And that wasn't the only one the advertising standards agency had problems with.
At the same time, yes they do employ a number of very good chaps. I doubt if we are talking double digit percents though.

I think that 'double digit' amount of good engineers is probably industry wide in these times I'm afraid and not just BG

Got to agree with you there Dave, sitting ACS this week and was amazed at what I was hearing today, not just from candidates

Erh, I can't argue with that actually, and even if you exclude the ee's, it doesn't get much better.

Was on a manufacturer course the other month and out of 10 people there, 7 didnt know how to spin a Grundfos pump?!!!!

I am pretty sure the plate heat exchanger wasn't taken off-don't think thhe boiler was drained down and presume that means stripping the boiler down quite a lot.

With the water test referred to can the water be taken from anywhere on the system?

Help so far much appreciated.

It isnt always necessary to remove the plate heat ex to diagnose its blocked, temp readings can prove that.... but its best to!!!!! especially as nickso said earlier, you should get the job sorted then quoted for remedial work before any more water parts......

boiler can be drained in a couple of minutes. water sample can be taken from any point on the system.

I didnt do anything. He wanted a quote for a combi and i told him to make a fuss on the phone and get british gas back to change the pump. He had a mexico with twin pump system and as the hotwater was working fine it was obvious he needed a new heating pump.
He did however stink of p#ss so thats probably wh the BG bloke did a bunk.

Touched a raw nerve :?: ;)
