Make your own magnaclean

It seems to me that a magnaclean is simple a jar with a magnet inside a plastic protector. How comes it costs a ton?

Surely, Blue Peter style, these could be easily made at home for a fraction of the price.

I don't get it! How can anyone charge this for a magnet which can be bought from anywhere? You could even make one that is pretty close to shape by sticking (through their own magnetic properties) thin stick magnets together.

This sounds like a huge rip-off!

A few offcuts of 22mm and a few tees to make a parallel ladder framework with a magnet strapped to the outside would do the trick for under a fiver.

i looked into it but hit a stumbling block on the container side.

aside from getting a bespoke container made, probably costing as much as a magna off ebay, the only container i though of off the shelf was a diesel filter. ive not looked into that part any further but could imagine having to retap the connections. magnets....i was looking at speaker magnets.

TBH buying a spirovent off ebay for £40 isnt going to break the bank as an alternative.

It's the principle of the matter.
A cylinder or box with a lid capable of withstanding a few bar, a couple of tank connectors, a couple of iso valves, and a camera film tube with a magnet inside it ain't £100

A boiler is a bit more complex than a magnet in a can.
Half a dozen magnets in half a dozen cans buys you a boiler. Doesn't seem right.

Hmm... Oh yes - just found one on Ebay with pics - clear jar to show it working.

Those really strong magnets can be sourced from many places, even old hard drives.
IT does look like a DIY version could be made.
Methinks I'll keep my eye out for a container for this

The average production price is about 15% of the shop floor price.
To produce a magnaclean competitor, you would need to source the materials for about a fiver if you want to make a profit.

You can pick them up without warrantee for about 60 squid, not really worth spending a day trying to imitate one with all the risks involved.

It might be me, but I would not know where to go for a really strong magnet that stays strong for years in nearly boiling water.

Or even cow magnets (used in cattle to catch the nails etc cws eat)

Alinco Rod is very good for high heat applications & likely what is used in the real deal.

All not very expensive.

The magnet is not the problem, the container is.

And the whole thing is not rocket science.
Actually finding a suitable container that can have 2x 20mm outlets and a bleed vent, with removable lid & storage for the magnet that will withstand the pressure is the hard bit.

As I want a magnaclean I think I'll be asking around for a suitable container now

BTW, will a magnet work through copper?
It may not pick it up, but what about say... having a replaceable length of pipe with magnets around the outside?

Perhaps better with plastic pipe.

Then you just whip that out & clean in the pipe or replace it - plastic is cheap enough.

I have occasionally thought about fitting an ordinary small radiator "upside down" with Top Top Opposite Ends valves as a sediment trap. Then all the heavier sediment would tend to fall to the bottom and you could squirt it out from time to time if you felt like it.
