Daily Telegraph Expert says homeowners can fit own boilers

in that case ill let my apprentice know he can go around working on his mates boilers, fix them and fit em. because if it isnt for gain it doesnt matter.now i find him compotent yet he knows and i know hes way off being safe enough to work on gas aplliances without me making sure he doesnt kill someone.

Don't rise to the bait. I almost did then started to fall asleep

below is a letter to me from Gassafe.

I also have a letter from Mr Thompson and the HSE saying that DIY gas in this country is not a problem.

And before anyone starts, I do not agree with DIY gas and never have, subject to a few exceptions.

It seemed to me that Scruff had not managed to elicit the correct response from Gas Safe. So I contacted GS and the HSE. I have received a reply from both, this is the one from the HSE-

"""I have contacted the Senior Communications Manager for the Gas Safe Register who has advised that they have been in contact with Jeff Howells of the Daily Telegraph regarding the article on the installation of multi fuel stoves.

Gas Safe Register have provided the Daily Telegraph with information in respect of the inaccuracies in the article and have requested that they print a correction to ensure that the public have the correct gas safety related information."""

We should now look for a ( low key ? ) correction to be printed!

As long as the finished job is safe and does it does what it supposed to do.

Competence in a pro or DIYer is by what you do. Prior qualifications only allow you to peddle your skills for money, they do not mean you are competent, that is by what you do - the end result.

How is the diyer to know if it's safe? He has the required tools? he has registered the said work (if installed), and wrong....competence is by qualification in the case of gas, i've had a flying lesson, would you want me to fly you abroad who knows maybe i'll land safely and tell the old bill it was ok 'cause as i landed safely i am competent and therefore legal to fly.......

Don't bother with George Dr BigBurner Drivel Bramwell, he'll only bang on that the "law" is what matters, whilst ignoring that HSE documents and gas regulations do define "competence" and are legally binding in that failure to comply leaves one open to prosecution by, er, the law.

Can we make it to 4 pages......
I really dont understand how some off you cant just let an argument pass them by.

There is someone on the internet who is wrong!. This cannnot be ignored.

but not necessarily the correction you would like to see yes the article contained inaccuracies but
But there is nothing to stop you as an individual from buying a new boiler and fitting it yourself.
is not one of them. stupid, dangerous and irresponsible yes if you are not competent but like it or not, legal

powell30, proof of competence to join gas-safe is indeed via qualifications but all the law asks for is that you are competent
Competence is the ability to perform a specific task, action or function successfully. this definition is from wikipedia I would add safely in the case of gas.your analogy with regards to flying a plane I don't quite understand as there is no law that allows you to fly if you deem yourself competent you have to have a pilot licence to legally fly
dextrous where does it define competence in the gas regulations?
by the way I do think it should be made law that diy gas is illegal i'm just saying at the moment it is not
plus I wanted to make it four pages

:D[/b]

I accept it is possible for a diyer to go get copies of gas regs, buy correct tools and follow manufactuers instructions, what happens is reality is far different. Ask on here how many times we see dangerous diy work (and sometimes RGI work).....then ask us how many times we see good to regs diy gas work........if a diyer gets it wrong they go to prision....just like me, because we broke the law in not fitting/repairing/servicing.

The only reason diy work is carried out is to save money.....period, regardless of quality

Tony has the wrong end of the stick with my post.

My letter to Gassafe was passed to them from Broag

As some of you know, I retired gracefully a while back, although still involved in the industry.

I wrote a tongue in cheek letter to Broag ashing if they would object to me DIYing one of their boilers in my own home.

They passed it on to Gassafe, and later phoned me to say it was ok, Gassafe in the meantime sent the letter as published.

The question is, after 50 years in the trade, am I still competent the day I retired, or do I become another DrDrivel over night.
