I have been to see some friends who have been in a flat for 9 days and while there the power went off, apparently this happens most days. Their CU and meter is in the landlords internal shed/workshop & I went with him to reset it.
Here is a picture
View media item 15086The incoming supply is 2 grey and yellow earth bottom left, the cutout is somewhere behind the workbench to the right.
I took the lids off but couldn't find anything wrong
View media item 15082There is a 10.5 Kw shower, full size cooker, immersion heater, 3Kw over basin water heater, 13A sockets (ring?) and lighting.

BTW he has been warned its an expensive flat to run...
Can any one see anything wrong?

Just a few pointers.
  1. Is that a VO ELCB above the CU? What supply type?
  2. Who pays the bill and where do the tails go from the top of the VO ELCB?
  3. Why the holes in the top of the CU? Not to IP4X and no grommets.
  4. Blue fuse bases are for 15A
  5. Why black (possible undersized) tails?
  6. Lack of earth Sleeve
  7. Is the white tape on the front of the CU covering holes?
  8. Where does the white wire go?

I'm so glad I asked here
1] It is a Chilton ELT but looks like it gets its control signal via the earth and white wire from the RCD in the CU. The white wire is 2 pair telephone cable. dont know what supply is.
2] Fred pays the bill and the tails and 4mm earth go up the wall through the ceiling to the room above which is part of the landlords property, as do most of the T&E's. Clamp showed 7A at the time. power and light for the shed come from this CU.
3] Don't know but be fair the (newer) lighting cables have a stuffing gland.
4] Yep and red for 30A and yellow for 20A.
5] I/C (grey) tails look 35mm black ones look 10mm ( 10.5Kw shower, cooker, ring, immersion...)
6] Be fair the lighting cables have earth sleeves and one of the bigger cables has a white sleeve.
7] Yes the hole has been cut bigger.
8] Control link between the Chilton ELT and RCD ??
I think the cables are 7/0.029 and I think the shower is parallel fed, there is a ring(?) and the cooker is 30A breaker on 7/0.029 all not checked.
What isn't obvious in the pics is L&N are reversed between the Chilton and CU.
Meter is not sealed and fixed with 2 screws and flapping, ELT is fixed with 1 screw, CU is fixed with 2 screws on right side with left side flapping, tatty plank back board standing on floor and fixed(?) to wall with 1 nail.

This is a rented property and supposedly has a current landlords inspection. There is an agent involved, I have suggested
1] Asking agent to arrange a proper inspection.
2] Disconnect the top tails and see what goes off, I wanted to do that today but Fred said no.
3] withhold rent till its put right.
Failing the above
4] Move out, this would be a shame as it really is a fantastic ground floor flat and Fred has mobility issues due to industrial accident.

Freds phoned, LEB (or whatever) are ther now and straight away took out the Chilton and top tails...

I trust it's just some unusual choice of cable routing that only makes it look like all the outgoing T/E is connected directly to the busbar...

You might like to note that when I replied, Sunray's post consisted entirely of:

and nothing else.....

Ahh that makes sense, when I tried to attach the pics I inadvertantly hit submit.

Do you think there is some sort of planned routing in there?
If your referring to the blacks, they are.

I have only just realised the left hand MCB is unused.

It seems the Landlord is complaining his leccy has gone off.

I wonder why?

To make it safer LEB have Installed a new back board for meter and new 100A isolator and tails, moved the 20A MCB to the cooker and disconnected the 10.5Kw shower (30A fuseholder with 3 bits of fuse wire).

Cheeky f*ck.

I'm guessing this very grubby install had the landlord stealing his supply from some poor unsuspecting tenant for decades...
