i found in a lab sockets that look the same as a 13amp socket but the earth pin is round the live and neutral pins are slightly bigger as well

what are the they have baffled the staff since they moved there

:?: :?:

Could be sockets with a 'clean earth' or non-rcd protected sockets reserved for a special purpose for which an RCD would be inconvenient.

Aye, used to stop the cleaners from plugging in their Hoovers!
Also have seen sockets with horizontal earth pins for the same reason.

The sockets with the horiz pins were supplied on general purpose sockets and matching plugs were fitted to the Hoovers.

The protected sockets on the work benches were the regular ones.

Before that the cleaners just used the most convenient sockets with leads that dragged across work areas and equipment.

Seen similar, in hire centres, for there clare test meters as they would otherwise trip the Rcd when there testing the equipment, before hiring out.

Apparently for Eho , all there sockets must be RCD protected , so thats there way to conform.

Sometimes all the normal sockets are wired via a safety emergency stop button system, these non standard ones may not be.

In addition to those MK and Wandsworth types, there is also the Walsall style, which has all the pins rotated by 90 degrees:

There is another type - made by Crabtree if I recall correctly - which is similar to the Wandsworth style but with a flat section on the top of the otherwise-round earth pin.
