MCB 32A TRIPPING

get your torch out and turn off all everything. then see what it says !

Just did it apart from the thing I can't turn off pc etc , It went down to 375 watts

That sounds about right... Looks like you have an intermittent live/neutral short circuit. It may be better to get a pro in to have a look.

live/neutral short , Is this something that can just happen ? As nothing has recently been added or taken away from the circuit in question

Nail in the wrong place, hungry rodents ;) ;),Movement is cables causing chaffing on sharp edge !

Well its def not a nail

Rodents - Never say never

Cable chaffing - Never say never

Any idea how much this might cost me ?

Sorry had another idea , Could it be the face plate off the socket I was talking about with the kettle plugged in ?The wife has just decided to tell me she thinks she heard the bang come from there whn it tripped yesterday !!! bloody yesterday and she tells me now !!!! NOT HAPPY !!!!!

You really need to do some insulation resistance tests. I would not replace a 32A breaker if its tripping as it requires more than 32A to trip. There is a fault on that circuit that would be present accross live and netrual. There is a fault that needs to be found. At the end of the day all you have done is help a fire start by contiunally allowing a fault to be present and not correctly investigating its cause. I would turn off that circuit lock it off and leave it off until you can get a spark to come and test that circuit. To test that circuit you need an insulation tester at least.

Thats what I reckon as well... may be worth having a look at the kettle socket though......... could save a mint if the fault is obvious.

Is this circuit RCD protected?

Take the socket in question off and see if you can see anything untoward (with the power off of course!)

As has been said, if it's tripping; it's tripping for a reason! Don't just keep putting it back on!

No it doesn't have a RCD

Well the MCB was reset yesterday at about 7pm and it stayed on , But hten at about 2am it tripped again (5hours it was tripping after an hour before) , As I said before I set up the home energy usage box in the vain hope I might see a HUGE spike before it tripped , So I guess I'm going to start having a nose around behind the sockets , Im not going to reset it now as it is going for a reason but I am miffed as to what and why .

Anyone seen the film Paranormal Activity ?

As there's no RCD this could also be a live-to-earth fault.

32A running in your CPC is NOT a good thing.

LEAVE THAT BREAKER OFF UNTIL YOU FIX THE PROBLEM.

Having this circuit off may be an inconvenience, but not as inconvenient as a burnt down house!

Peace.

Personally the first thing I would do is check out that socket the wife mentioned (dead of course).

My dad had a similar problem after he'd done some papering - the neutral and live had become good neighbours somehow when he put the socket back.

Please, take this seriously. We're giving you serious advice, and you're implying something paranormal is happening here. If you believe this, please get the place exorcised, but the problem will still be there. Its a spark you need, not a priest.

Trust me I know its serious , I need to have a little light heartness about it .

RIGHT !! Serious question , In my defence I already said I am not an electrician . So this might seem like a stupid question but I am 40 on the 2nd Jan and I would like to see my 40th . Im going to take a look inside the socket , Of course I am going to turn off the main power from the board (big red switch) But IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY OF A LIVE CURRENT STILL PASSING THRU THE WIRES IN THE SOCKET WHEN I TAKE IT OFF AND START POKING AROUND ?

If the whole house is turned off, there won't be any power in the socket. (unless it is powered via your neighbours stealing your electricity through the wall, but that is exceptionally unlikely).

If you locate the fault it will be obvious - blackened and burnt wires.

Yes, it's possible. You could have a faulty main switch.

ALWAYS check for dead with an approved voltage indicator.
You'll probably lack one of those so your option may be limited to a multimeter.

It's been a while, hasn't it.

Hope he did check for dead.

What test was he going to do and who advised it.

Just to be clear.
