hi guys - what the purpose of the engine cover on my renault megane 1.5dci ?...mine is missing, thinking of getting one but dont fancy shelling out £45 for something that sits on the top of the engine....does it reduce engine noise ?...my engine seems slightly louder when its idling and im sitting in the cockpit..lol

Generally engine covers and undertrays are to reduce noise, it doesn't make a lot of difference inside the car but makes them sound more 'refined' outside. I wouldn't worry about it.

that really depends on the car,
on the ford galaxy/sharan/alhambra it is a necessity to have the under tray insitu, and water coming up into the engine area can cause problems with the power steering.

I agree there are exceptions, that's why I said generally. None of my XMs have them, the engines are filthy but much easier to get at :D

Whereas the acoustic hoods are there to reduce noise (believe it or not), the plastic undertray may have greater importance if your car's engine air intake is pointing downwards. The undertray may prevent water splash from being sucked into the engine and causing a hydraulic lock and massive damage - so always fit it if there's meant to be one.
Thankfully most manufacturers are fitting the air intake facing forwards protected by the front grille these days...and the air filter boxes have a water drain hole too.
John :)
