hello guys,

bit of advice pls first of all I have been in the heating industry since leaving school 14 years ago, I have been unfortunte enough to of worked for british gas for 6 years and eaga for 3 years before that i done a 4 year apprenticeship in plumbing & heating.

I am thinking of leaving eaga due to a massive cut in wages, but it is up for review rumurs have it will be 30k basic plus overtime, at the moment it is 24,300 per yer plus £20 per job after 5 a day. it was £47.50 tho!

So here is my question if i spend money of a posh van advertise via internet website, yell pages and local papers, what are the chances of a 1 man band trying to make a good living ie 1k a week?

been invited on as a contractor at bg got to go on a assessment day tho.
was thinking of getting my mortgage money via bg work for the first 2years.

thanks for any advise.

Right now, you are better sticking with a salary job.

The heating and plumbing business is very quiet at the moment.

Why not wait a year? Your timing is off!

hello pal, fed up to be honest!

might do a career change to a mortgage adviser! only 6 weeks then am qualified!

I'm thinking of doing that but for plumbing!

Do you think that maybe there's a mortgage adviser forum where they're moaning about CCCs?

Stick with it, buddy. Try changing companies if you're unhappy there, til times are more favourable for start ups, i.e. when all the people that recently got into it coz they can earn "bare dollar" realise that they infact can't and drop out.

Young lad i know only couple of years experience has just been accepted for heating installation work for BG .Said exam piece of P .
£21 an hour within a certain distance of his home postcode rising dependent on how far out.

But just remember all BG jobs are measured in hours (time and motion) so 21 quid an hour will not be the correct rate dependent on how fast or slow you are

like i said before i worked fo bg for 6 years 4 direct 2 as a contractor
(installation) i was on £23 3 years ago, been asked back loads since the most they offer in my area is 24.50 on installation so they say, but i can do repairs for about £21.00 an hour with a Bg van on service & repair

most of my work has been in installation, but i have been doing Ideal boilers warrenty stuff for 3 years.

when will we get our industry back from the claws of these 6 week training centers? there killing this industry.

id go for it to be honest, this industry needs well qualified people like youself, as there is 1 to every 3 or 4 nobheads who think they can work on gas etc:cool:

only a mindless **** would say ideal are crap, they have as good a range of boilers as baxi & worcester.

Absolute crap. Do you have shares in ideal or work for their marketing dept? Nobody with a brain in this trade believes your statement.

When ideal go bankrupt you'd make a very good politician!

I know loads of good plumber's in the Greater Manchester area that are all struggling to make £500 a week let alone £1000.

In the last 5 years the amount of gas registered contracters has more than doubled, (manchester) all working for them selves, Because there not qualified enough to work for a company.

Its cut throat.
