do i need banana plugs on hifi sockets?

The wires can be connected directly. You will need to undo them and reterminate the wires occasionally, as the exposed copper will oxidise and eventually result in a poor connection.

If you use gold plated plugs, this won't be a problem (the gold plating is there as it won't oxidise or corrode). Obviously the plugs would have to be soldered on to the wires.

If they are banana post terminals you can either use banana plugs, unscrew the post fully and insert the wire through the hole and screw it down (if there is a hole of course) or use fork crimp terminals.
