Server side low latency multithreaded c++ financial. ..... apps, no idea, geek, yes very, but at least i know how it works under the bonnet, yawn yawn!! (I'm boring myself now!!)

As a programmer, I know that facebook is used for brain dead cultural reasons, namely being a social meme. There is also a false assumption, mainly propagated by self interested futurist that you are nothing without facebook. Anyone with any common sense know this is bullshit.
Facebook is mainly built using php, which is then compiled with HipHop into C++. That is because it was built by php developers and then optimised later. They still use php developers.
In terms of the basic architecture it is as old as the hills, as is what is behind twitter. The main key is changing people behaviour through the interface. The genius of twitter, is that limitation, is behind "micro bloging" culture.
I think if you are like me and have friend on facebook, and they want you to be. make up a face name, anonymous photo, keep things to a bare minimum and private.
facebook will definitely be replaced, with the next fascination. Actually the way people collaborate in real time on project is far more useful than a fake on line persona.

Just goes to show that best practises don't always equal success.
Even I like Ruby, but even I know it doesn't fit ever situation. Twiter is based on Rails, but they had to migrate their message handling to scala.
Increasingly concurrence and message passing is becoming key and languages like erlang that a are build specifically for this. Dispute idealism, the model use such as the actor model makes a big difference in terms of concurrency.
