Hello
I am looking at buying a Texecom Alarm, and planning on having a Texecom Premier 48 control panel.

I want the GSM module however.........it is about £250!!!!!!!

Does anyone have any experience of fitting these panels and knows if I can use a cheaper GSM dialler and still get the same functionality?

Any help /advice would be much appreciated!

Thanks
Jim

Hi jim

gsm diallers are all around the same ballpark when it comes to price. GJD do the cheapest gsm/voice dialler.

They are comparatively easy to install to any system with programmable outputs. I would however strongly recommend the sms feature is not used as the primary method of signalling as its very unreliable.

Thanks for the reply.

What would you say is the best method? PSTN?
Also what do you feel makes the GSM method unreliable? If im spending £250 on the thing id like to think i could rely it on sending me a text message!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Thanks

Simple really, text message centres drop off line. Get busy and report hours later.
Get a monitered system or a speech dialler.

Well the best method is both tbh, a polled pstn path and gsm/radio back-up path, but, this is pro monitoring.

There's nowt unrelaible with the dialler, its the gsm network. ever sent a text and its took forever to be delivered??.

Thanks for the replys guys.

Would I be better off with say:

Premier Com2400 Plug On Digicom / 2400-baud modem with SMS text messaging. (PCOM2400)

Rather than the gsm module? Also will the above give me the ability to arm the system remotely?

While I agree that landline based PSTN to SMS via TAP gateways are not the best, my experience of SMS via GSM message centers has been excellent.

What networks are you using? The only time I ever have SMS issues are at heavy network load times like x-mas and new year. Even the landlines struggle at these times though! The GSM networks are constantly being upgraded. Just ask your average teenager how good the networks are. They're sending hundreds of SMS mesages every day...

This still relies on the sms over pstn which is unreliable.

Jim, this is your system, you can fit what you like, we can only advise you as to the pro's/con's with regard to the equipment you install.

Personal recommendation from me would be the menvier sd3

socdesign i hear you, but are you telling me that hundreds of texts are being sent at 2-3-4 am

your point about xmas and new year are precisely what i'm on about, sms is inherently unreliable from a security POV

1st, I know nothing about sending Txt messages from an alarm system.

From what I have read on professional Alarm Forums, it seems this problem with SMS is quite widespread.

The number that the system has to dial is not always available, changed without notice, does not connect etc etc.

So, you install an SMS system, the alarm activates, you get the message.

6mths later, the alarm activates in the morning, you find out when you get home the next day from a trip - NO message received.
The reason the number your SMS is calling, no longer exists.

This does happen frequently, the number/s you would use are not the same as you using your 'phone to send a Txt.

Go down the SD3 route, great piece of kit from a good manufacturer, can dial more than one number until acknowledged & accepted, just like you phoning a friend, how often does that not work?

This might not be a very good explanation but taking into account my first line, I don't think it's too bad :)

Cant argue with that! ;)

There are generally three methods of sending an SMS from an alarm panel.

The first and most common method is via the PSTN telephone line. The alarm panel has either an on-board MODEM or an additional module that has a MODEM. The MODEM is configured to dial up a gateway telephone number and send an SMS via TAP. Unfortunately this is the most unreliable. The dial up number gets overloaded and the SMS messages that do get through are often queued. One of the biggest downsides to this method is that there's no feedback to the message originator that the SMS reached its destination. The alarm panel has blind faith that once the TAP based service has taken the SMS, that it will deliver it.

The second is via GSM. The alarm panel will have a GSM MODEM (on-board or module) that connects to a Telco messaging service to send the SMS (there are a couple of ways that this is achieved, but I'll not go into that). As this is a common method for sending SMS, it is supported much better by the Telco's. In my experience this service is excellent.

The third is basically via internet. The alarm panel will have an Ethernet connection (again on-board or module) that it uses to connect to an internet based messaging service. There are different levels of service and you pay for what you get.

Just to add Europlex was spot on, as Socdesign.

Sms is too unreliable, I use it on my own panel to see when people come and go ( Sons), And a a redcare for security.
