Good idea? Or just another way to kill more people and use more fuel. I thought we were into conservation and looking after the environment? Obviously not.

It's not going to bother me in all honesty, I 've had my van new since early 2009 and I've only touched 70mph once , I rarely go above 55 even on motorways. Plus most of the works vans I drive are limited to 62mph so I'll just watch all the smug faced bmw drivers wasting even more petrol in the belief they are creating wealth for the country.

The idea is to kill of more pensioners to save money and as the defence budget has been cut there will be less fuel used in fighter aircraft etc, ;) ;)

My 320d does stacks more MPG than any of my vans past and present.
Glad you felt the need to mention Bimmer drivers though.

I'm all for 80. I can then drive at 90 and will probably not get a ticket.

Agreed.

All these do gooders about fuel, we pay for it so we can burn it,

As for the higer death tolls, tosh. Most drive at 80 anyway.

What they intend doing is enforcing it at 80mph. So 81mph and 3 points and a fine. Proper order too.

i have no problem with people doing 80/90/100mph in a 120mph car
as long as they have a 100mph brain eye sight and reactions to match
as for doing 55mph it may be worth trying speeds between 50 and around 60 to get the best mpg as engines often have a most efficiant speed for fuel economy
now you would assume a slower speed would automatically win but worth a try

80 is my usual speed on the motorway, I won't drive any faster when the 80 limit is there.

So I guess I'll be not exceeding the speed limit then.

Result

The big danger is that the middle lane will become the 80 lane and the outside the 90 lane - yet the inside lane full of trucks doing 58mph? Too much speed differential - it'll be carnage. Not only that - the 10mph difference raises fuel use by 20%. The limit should come down to 60mph. One day it will.

It was once 50 , look at the balls up that caused.

Google oil crisis.
