Hi all,

I'm having a massively frustrating time at the moment trying to find the correct light fitting. It's a low level plinth light that i have in my kitchen kick board.

I brought a new build property from Shanly Homes in 2009 and i ordered 8 low level lights. These were in the show home and my understanding is they were ordered from Paula Rosa, however after lengthy discussions and an order of 2 which i thought were correct they came the other day and they aren't right. They are now saying they changed the supplier since and can't find out what they are. Also they are saying that they didn't put the lights in, only the holes in the kick board.

Shanlys are no help and haven't got a clue and Paula Rosa are along the same veins.

I am no electrican and pretty useless if i have to say so, however i was wondering if anybody knew where i would be able get one of the following bulbs/fixtures. I'll upload a couple pictures but the ones i need are the ones on the right. The one on the left is the one that Paula Rosa supplied but is incorrect, the on the right is the one that isn't working.

What's the problem with the one on the left?

Noting to be honest it's brand new, but it's a different to the one on the right (glass over bulb, metal cover at back is longer although can't see it much in this picture). It's slightly bigger so wouldn't fit in the kickboard, even if it did it would look completely different to the one already there. I do have a couple other pictures which show the difference a little more, however tried uploading them and have already had one warning from the IT dept at work about that one!

I can always email them to people but can't upload anything further until this evening.

To my taste the one on the left looks much better, but there ya go.

Didn't know they needed a larger hole.

You will probably end up having to find a set of lights which you like, and which need the same size or larger hole, and replace the lot. And maybe buy a few spares at the time, because often the bulbs can't be replaced so when one packs up you'll have the same impossible task of finding replacements which match.

OR - put new plinths in, without holes, and fix LED strips under the overhang of the bottoms of the units. e.g. http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Products/SK153718.html

Nearest I know of are these:
http://www.sensio.co.uk/Sensio-Round-1W-Plinth-Light---Satin-Chrome-1231-3.html
although they are satin chrome rather than polished

Thank you for this, i'll have a look at the sizes and get a couple. Anybody know where you can get the same thing but polished? To be honest you can hardly tell whem the lights are on what finish it is, but would always try and get them to match.

EDIT ** Sorry, something else. I have just tried to look at buying these but there are no prices and i can't see how i can?

It looks like a VLM Optospot, though it might be a copy. Double check the driver for these (the little box they are powered from) is a 350mA constant current one. If it is then you can find them at Mr Resistor

http://www.mr-resistor.co.uk/item.aspx?g=10&t=242&r=522&i=3102&a=0

This is cool white, but they are also available in warm white for special order, though you will need to contact the company.

Disclaimer: I work for Mr Resistor as a lighting designer

edit: The ones we have are polished chrome finish (it is actually plastic, but one of the best chrome plastic finishes I have seen).

Eeek expensive when you include delivery and VAT.

Thank you very much though, think these are cool white that i have as well. I'm 99% sure that is the right size too, i'll have to double check when i get home.

Are you sure it is the LED which is faulty and not the driver?

Hiya,

Yeah as all the other lights are working. Have taken it out and everything else appears correct to what it should be.

Hi all,

I'm back, sorry!

I brought a couple of the bulbs from Lark and Lark (http://www.larkandlarks.co.uk/kitchens/kitchen-bedroom-lights/led-kitchen-lights/round-1w-plinth-led-lights) however as you can see from the picture i posted it has a red/black wires seperately and they individually go into a small plastic 'socket' where you put them in and then screw down the screw onto the wire. (Sorry, i am completely useless when it comes to details, so laymans terms are used!!!).

The lights have turned up and although they start seperately the come together and have a fitting at the end of the wires and looking at the plastic unit the wires go into there is nothing for this to slot into and click into place. Any ideas what i would need to do? I really dont want to call out an electrician as it's probably a simple job to do and dont want to get stung massively for what is more than likely a 5 minute job for somebody with the skill/knowledge. If i have too, i would, but that is last resort.

The ones you've bought have plugs which are meant to plug into the driver units they sell.

If your driver is compatible you can cut the plugs off and connect them up the way your existing ones are.

Bear in mind that will almost certainly cause you problems with any warranty claims.

I looked and i don't think there is anywhere (driver = main hub where it's all connected??? Am i right in thinking?) that the plug will fit into. I will try and get a couple pictures of it this evening.

Again, silly question but how do you cut the plug off? Sorry, really am no good at these things.

Probably not - your existing lights are not the same as the new ones you bought, so their method of connection won't be the same.

These:

are not wired directly into the mains.

whatever they connect to is what you must connect the new ones to, assuming it's compatible - you need to compare the specs of that with the one which would normally be used with the new ones.

With a pair of side cutters.

Sorry, really am no good at these things.
I'm beginning to think you might have to get someone in to do it.
