Why is iit at some sporting events we are Great Britain, were we scrape together the best we can get from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (and any nippy looking foriegners we wave a passport at.)

When others, World Cup Football and Rugby and the like, we are seperate nations?

Is it because when we are truly on the worlds stage we want to get as many medals as we can and decide to pool our resources?

Also, how many types of cycling can you get? Whats next? The backwards riding tandem event? This goes for every silly variation of a sport we have in the Olympics.

Why's Hong Kong got its own placing? Its part of China isn't it?

You will have to ask the relevant organizations as they make the rules:

IOC (Olympics); IAAF (athletics); ICU (cycling); FINA (swimming) FIFA etc etc.

Wow. Ask a serious question and you cannot move for humorous remarks. Make a non serious comment in this forum and get a serious answer.

Where is joe-90 when you need him? His comments may be humorously right or equally humorously wrong but at least he is a springboard for conversation most times.

Same in athletics, 100m 200m then they stick hurdles on the track, long jump, high jump, triple jump not forgetting the egg&spoon race and the 3legged race, and so and so on.

I would hasten to add that if you dont like the sport or understand it then it might seem a bit pointless, take football for instance, 22 men chasing a ball round a field getting paid vast sums of cash and the clubs they play for are £millions in the red.

I was having a chat with friends about the "relavance" or otherwise of certain sports to everyday life.
Whilist sports such as running , swimming , and archery evolved from skills needed in everyday life to either put food on the plate or prevent you becoming the meal other sports are a bit more odd.Take for instance the triple jump or hop , skip and jump as it was called at school, when is that going to be of any use to anybody? Others fall into the same catagory such as synronised diving or dressage and then there are sports that baffle me for instance javalin , discus , hammer and shot put. Why do archers and shooters have to hit the target but javalin throwers and all the others just have to wang it as far as possible and hit a field?
All in all the sport we reckoned had the most relavance was beach volleyball because it's the sort of thing real people actually play on holiday :D

It is rather a lot of effort and money to kick an inflated pigs bladder about.

My suggestion for Football is for them all to wear the same coloured shirt, that way they can work together to score more goals and hopefully get it over and done with quicker.

I can see why javelin, hammer and discus are done, its based around the whole weapons/army thing. Show off your prowess with the javelin in front of the ladies. In that respect I get running, also jumping maybe, wrestling, shooting, archery, all aspects that are of use to a soldier/army.

If archery and shooting, where aim is important, a sport, why isn't darts? We could have had more gold medals if they included darts.

Volleyball I can see the need for that. The womens version anyways. They could make it even better if they made it topless.

Very interesting theory, we could actually take this to the next level, instead of wasteing a couple of hours watching the match lets go straight to the penalty shootout.

Its him in the black shirt I feel sorry for. He hardly ever gets a touch of the ball. How's he supposed to win?

I'd like to know how the female athlete from Saudi Arabia actually qualified for the race she took part in. She was last, finishing almost 41 seconds behind the winner of the heat.
I always thought, athletes had to reach a certain qualifying time to even be considered.

Do the muslim women from the more extremist states have to run in a hijab? Was that why she was behind everyone else?
