No to 80mph

Raise the limit to 80 and put cameras up everywhere. In time the speeders and middle lane hoggers will be eliminated and the motorways will be a safer place.

Oh, if only that were so. Idiots abound.

Speed kills, so they say, but what about dickheads who pull out without looking or signalling, or prats who tailgate, or w*****s who fall asleep at the wheel?

Just a few examples.

Edit: I though they'd have censored the 'd' word!

The pull-out-without-signalling-or-looking dickheads are the ones making a beeline straight across the inside lane heading directly to the middle lane. So they'd be gone. Most of the tail gating is also down to the sit-in-the-middle-lane dickheads blocking up the lane. So most of those would be gone as well. Get rid of the dickheads and things will be much improved.

The middle and right lane would both be full of lane hoggers doing 80. No tailgaters or speeders due to the averaging cameras.

There's 50mph average speed cameras on the M62 between Leeds and Halifax and there's an accident on that stretch every week.

If traffic is bunched you will get accidents simple.

I love average speed cameras. If you travel the first half at 20mph then you can do the second half at 120mph and still only average 50mph...wonderful things.. :D

Yup. He's an idiot alright.

And why? They've been there for ages, and whenever I drive along that section there's no bugger working.

As long as idiots 'with flair'(sic) don't run into me then that's assured.

Wouldn't be me I have never had a bump.
Did get annoyed yesterday though. Following a car out of town and noticed it driving erratically , veering between the kerb and then over the white line. Nearly ran into the car in front.
Watched the drivers head and it kept leaning towards the centre of the car and looking down...

When we got to some traffic lights and stopped I got out of my car and opened his door.

'Are you going to start concentrating on your driving or just f*** about on your phone?' I said.
'I haven't been on my phone!' said the shocked looking driver
'havent you? You have been all over the road' I said.
The lights changed so I slammed his door and went back to my car.

My biggest fear of dying on the roads now is some feckwit on an iphone veering accross the carriageway and snuffing out my life.

Being serious for a moment that nearly happened to me last week. How the fool in a range rover travelling at about 90 missed my wing mirror I'll never know. He passed me and carried on swerving all over the road. Either ****ed or on the phone.

I am all over that argument. I acted yesterday after week of noticing every other driver I looked at was on their bloody phone. That chap was just the last straw so he was the 'lucky' one who got my frustration.

Pedestrian deaths going up accident rate starting to climb , everyone on their phones but policing done by cameras that can only detect speeding.
Personally I think every car should have a phone signal defeating transmitter.

A car to me is a steering wheel. A speedo and a radio. everything else is just an unccecessary distraction. But then despite my flippant comments I take my driving very seriously.

Higher speed limits = less stable traffic flows = more traffic jams.

The science traffic flow on busy roads is well understood.

Ever come across traffic jams that do not seem to have any cause? They were likely to be caused by people tailgating. The higher speeds causes more intability in the flow, and the knock on effect is more jams.

Of course, lorries are a major source of this, owing to the big different in speed between the cars and lorries.

So increase the speed limit, and you increase this relative speed. And you increase the instability.

Very true there wobs.

I drive down the A42/M42 quite a bit, dual carriageway/two lane motorway, plenty of lorrys. I see that cars have to tailgate in the 'fast' lane because if you don't some lorry will pull out to fill the gap. So you end up doing 85 behind a lorry doing 55 and you have to slam on the anchors.

Thus causing a jam a mile back. And your two lorrys just carry on with a large void growing in front of them with no cars in it.

I think the solution is to ban lorrys from overtaking. They have done experiments where car travel is over 15% faster, whereby lorry travel time is hardly affected.
