How to cut 20mm thick steel

As the subject says I have an tank I need to scrap but its to big and heavy to move so I need to cut it up.

its 9ft long and 34inch barrel and must be about a ton, its 20mm thick so angle grinders would take years .

so I need to know what I could hire that do the job?

20mm thick? You need gas cutting gear mate - with a burner bar using oxy acetylene or oxy propane......for small cuts a Stihl saw would be ok, but not for that size.

Propane and oxygen is what you need. Or your local pikies will deal with it in jig time.

As above, a concrete saw with a disk for cutting steel, local hire shop will sort you out. Not the easiest thing in the world to hold onto for long periods.

Plasma cutter, if you know someone in the game or might be able to hire, not sure. You will need a compressor for this setup

You wont be able to hire the gas kit, well not over here anyway .....

What kind of tank and where did you steal it from?

Their usually worth more kept as tanks.

As scrap its worth around £150 minus your costs for chopping it too pieces.

As a pressure vessel with a plate thickness you state with full PED certification it would cost at least £3k to buy.

A lot of customers out there for a tank like that and a lot of uses.
Only a thief would consider cutting up a tank of that nature because they have something to hide.

What was the tank used for? Any sort of cutting involving heat might not be the greatest of ideas if the tank was use for storing any sort of fuel.

Then you shouldn't be advising on how to cut them up.
If it was a gas or fuel tank I wouldn't like to be the chap who penetrates the surface with burning equipment.

If it is gas then its the property of the gas supplier anyway.

first off the caravan is only use 1 week of the year at havens lol.

The tank is an oxygen chamber made in 1980 and originally from a north sea oil rig.
We bought the tank about 8 years ago and was use 4 times a week for my daughter who has cerebral palsy, we drop the pressure down to approx 10/15 ft and she was breathing oxygen. we stop due to cost of oxygen and to her not liking it due to how warm it got.

I am moving and the way we got the tank in was via crane over the top of the house into the back garden, the company quoted us over the phone blind and mis-judged it big time (lost over £1000) but honoured it as it was for my daughter.

to hire them it will cost £1150 ex vat to move it and If I sell it I have the same problem so that's why is scrap

It's just a shame you couldn't have posted that info at the beginning. Your daughters situation is bad enough but without a father a lot worse.

Under no circumstances should you make any attempt to cut this pressure vessel into scrap.

Just leave it alone if you cannot afford the crane to lift it out.

We hire in telescopic cranes from time to time and the most we are charged for an entire days operation is £500.
With the downturn in the construction industry they are much more keen for work these days.

This pressure vessel is worth at least £2500 as it sits. You just need to advertise in the right places and let the buyer arrange the lift out.
A potential buyer may even have their own crane.

thank you for your advice, but I have only a few weeks to get it moved and the new owners def don't want it left.

As you say its is worth more as a tank than scrap but I've offered it for FREE to 2 diving comps that make/repair and sell them if they can collect but they ain't interested.

so scrap it is im afraid, unless u want it? lol
