Something some of us have been aware of for some time, and which now seems to have official acceptance.

Why? What are the causes of this appalling situation? I'd be interested to hear members' opinions before stating my own.

(And I'd really appreciate it, Joseph, if this serious matter could be discussed sensibly.)

The fundamental cause of all our homegrown social problems began with the abolition of discipline in the education system.

Every generation of scum created by this, then go on to bring up scum children, and so it goes on.

I'm convinced of it.

You only have to watch Educating Yorkshire to see some of the reasons, the teachers seem to spend more time counseling and being buddies with the kids than they do educating them. There was a kid in the last episode I saw who had 29 detentions in one month and only at that point did the school think it was appropriate to ask the mother to come in and see them. Most of the kids seem to have zero respect for the teachers and the teachers seem incapable of instilling any kind of discipline whatsoever in them. Chewing gum in front of teachers, swearing at teachers, throwing desks etc, if any kids had done that when I was at school 16 years ago they would have been in serious trouble, not only with the school but even more so with my parents!

It’s a failure of discipline throughout life kids at school are for example able to ignore school uniform rules, this is when you should be learning to accept that in a society there are certain conditions of membership. No good joining the Police and complaining blue isn’t my colour!

We see young people who laugh at police because they are under age and cannot be punished, by the time they can, they are set in that frame of mind and with few commendable exceptions continue so for life.

There is a basic rule that has existed in society from the dawn of mankind if you don’t follow the rules of your tribe/clan you are kicked out and left to fend for yourself without any of the benefits and protections that members of that society enjoy.

They used to chuck ‘em out for the sabre tooth tigers to feed on!
Perhaps a little too extreme for kids playing truant though :D

The problem kids are kids of atheist parents. They're a rabble. Good Christian ethics and teaching prevented all of this. Well done to the atheist rabble.

Well, I think the 29 detention kid in EY was getting ready to go to his mums CHURCH wedding, so I'm sure you are correct since all atheists have church weddings.

A church wedding is trendy. Doesn't mean they are religious. Some people go to church to get their kids in good schools - typical atheist users.

Joe is obviously just having a bit of fun by dragging religion in, but if we wanted to take him seriously, we would look for evidence of a link between religious families and school results.

It would also be interesting to look for a link between long-term unemployment areas, and school results.

David Cameron's parents obviously didn't think that the state school system was good enough for their family.

I notice that in the league table, Scotland does not appear, and England is followed by Italy, France, and the USA. Perhaps Joe would like to pretend that these are countries without a religious presence.

I'm sure that half of it is the fact that these kids just don't want to bloody learn. The other half is the lack of discipline instilled in kids by their parents. Kids see their peers in school getting away with doing nothing and think "I'll do that too." When they come home from school, instead of doing homework, they'll sit for hours playing games on their X Box/Playstation. No wonder the youth of today struggle to find jobs.

Why do people join churches to get their kids in a certain school if the religious schools are so bad? Get back to Christian values before it's too late.

My daughter is a fully funded PhD student at Nottingham University. She was a kid from the Comp that dun good. The funding bodies only fund the pick of the students. Not all kids are lazy.

My youngest is in her final year of a 4 yrs masters course in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical chemistry, not bad from council house stock who Joe loves to despise.

Here ya go Joe, you tried to bring religion into this topic (by mentioning atheist parents) What do you make of this ??

PS well done to your daughter. I'm not saying that all kids are lazy, but it only takes a few disruptive kids in a class to lower the chances for the others

PPS, Ask your daughter if she knows a group called Alaskan Faction, (they are all students at Nottingham Uni, and quite good)

Because religious schools are permitted to choose who they take, other schools have to take who they are given. It's fairly easy to get good results if you can pick and choose.

You also contradict yourself by claiming that "atheist users" join churches to get their kids in to "good" schools, note the term ATHEIST, yet claim only religious people bring up kids well.

Note that religious schools being "good" may not be something that every former pupil of such a school would agree with..

It was the Labour parties assumption that all kids are equal. The 11 plus selection exam allowed bright kids from poor homes to get a top academic education, and those who failed the 11 plus got a practical education suited to their abilities. So everyone was educated according to there abilities and there was a good chance that they would get a job. The comprehensive system dragged all children to the lowest level.
And then the do-gooders got discipline banned!!
