Emergency cleaning company needed - South London

You are now saying it took the two professional cleaners 6 hours with their equipment to clean the rooms to your standards,

So in theory you expected this decorator on his own (without professional cleaning equiptment) to spend more than 12 hours cleaning the rooms,

Sounds like you did not give the job much thought before you suggested the woodwork should have been power sanded.

And I bet there is still a film of dust in the rooms despite the professional cleaners work, Once dust has been disturbed it takes weeks to settle.

You broke the number 1 rule!

You let a stranger into your house and left him there all day.

When any work is done in your property a member of the family should be home to sort any on going problems out and make tea.

Some people on here seem to have some serious issues comprehending simple scenarios.

Sounds like professional cleaners were only required to complete 12 hours work because the decorator did not seal up the rooms, which he had agreed to do.

I would have done the exact same thing, and got someone in to resolve the issue, and then billed it to the decorator. If he has walked off site thats great, hopefully the work he has done and not been paid for covers the cost of the cleaning!

This.

He had the initial down payment, which broke down at about £200 a day for the days he was on-site, so not really.

Seems they did not have a clue, anyone can call themselves decorators these days. It's a simple job to seal a room door even if it's just an opening. Polythene inside taped down all round and wet dust sheet outside as this catches any slight escape when you remove inner sheet.
Walls should have been damped down to reduce dust and when sanding floors I always wet the cloth catchment bags as this prevent dust escaping.

I sanded a ceiling of about 4 sq mtrs just inches from a smoke alarm without problem by setting up a curtain of polythene in a spiral to trap dust , took longer to prepare and remove than the sanding but that's part of doing a job properly.

So you expected the poor hard done by decorator to take reasonable and forseeable precautions to ensure his work did not damage your property and then go onto expect him to make some acknowledgement of his mistake? clearly the customer from hell! Next you'd probably be complaining of white gloss all over your carpet and door handles, the dec had a lucky escape from you an no mistake.

Good job bosswhite is here to put it all into perspective. Bet you wouldn't catch him putting dust sheets down or wiping his boots before coming in.

And woe betide you if you're not there overseeing his every move ready to put the kettle on a moments notice!

I don't supose you do decorating do you foxhole?!

;)
I hate decorating
Ironically I don't mind the decorating bit too much its the lengthy prep beforehand and painful tidying up/cleaning brushes etc I detest. A bit like the OP's decorator it seems!

And why should the decorator clean and tidy up rooms that were not involved in the redecorating, the decorator had no reason to go into those rooms, that is basically trespassing,
The poster knew what the problems would be when he employed the decorator to do the sanding, so had a responsibility to ensure that air bourne dust did not affect furnishings in said rooms.
Past posts by this particular poster show that he has unnecessarily complained about workmanship standards.
Sounds like one of those customers best avoided.

Any self respecting decorator will seal up the doors if he's about to do a load of sanding and allow for it in his quote.

You keep digging Boss!

Not really, we have only been told one side of the story, the customers.

Was the decorator supposed to sand off the doors and frames, if so how could he manage it with the doors being sealed off, the story appears to have changed on several accounts, (Doors do not fit etc) and sounds rather exaggerated

I have been in this business long enough to realise that not all customers are on the level, and the trend of TV "Bodge it Builder" programmes can make accusations against the workman very "one sided"

If I am working in a ground floor room, there is no reason for me to go in Bedrooms/rooms on the upper floors without permission, this opens up all sorts of allegations.
