Dumbing down?

I agree that some of the best minds in the world are Asian and particularly from the sub-continent. I think my point is that whilst all the British kids are learning Islamic studies or songs in Urdu or black history, they are not learning English or maths.

Well I certainly agree with that.

Again, religious studies (of whatever brand) is something that, in my opinion, should be taught outside of school. Parents should be at liberty to teach their children whatever flavour of religion they prefer or, of course, no religion at all if they are enlightened atheists (oh, oh - Joe alert!), so long as they do it in their own time. You are quite correct that some muslim schools seem to concentrate on religious studies and reading the koran almost to the exclusion of anything else.

Schools, especially primary schools, should concentrate only on the basic essentials of English and maths. Other things can come later when those basic skills have been mastered. In fact, one could argue that trying to teach and learn subjects other than these basics would be severely limited if pupils do not already possess a certain level of understanding of English and maths.

It was the Labour parties assumption that all kids are equal. The 11 plus selection exam allowed bright kids from poor homes to get a top academic education, !!
Indeed - but it was still meddled in by local politics . I had the misfortune to be only just bright enough to scrape through the 11 plus ( primary school was a Cof E near our Council Estate )Then started the worst 5 years of my life  I struggled in the bottom stream in the school that was underfunded ( because they knew Comps. were coming )And lost most of my M8`s who went to the sec. mod. All it did for me was make me a Socialist ( until Blair took over )I could have been in the top form in a sec. mod. and not had the **** ripped by ar**hole teachers who looked down on us . Education and politics is still in a deadly embrace .

See Eddie? If you want to tell porkies you have to have a good memory. I don't tell porkies so I never get caught out.

I got a first in my 3rd year thesis, which was on oil extraction a first in my 1st year in maths, and an overall 2:1 in chemistry.

Joe's like an annoying little fly buzzing around, isn't he?

Still, they tend to disappear round about this time of year.

I haven't got one. Went hitching around Oz instead. What have you ever done? Went to school, stayed at school and retired. What a fookin loser.

Well, since you ask, I have a qualification in radiography (DCR) and a BA degree with first class honours.

I'm not bragging - they are not particularly astounding degrees, as things go, but if it shuts you up...

No I wouldn't brag if I were you. You haven't earned the right to talk to a man who's lived a man's life in a man's world.

When you were 16 and Mummy was ironing your Y-fronts, I was hitching around Oz, had my 17th birthday living on the streets in Darwin. (Sleeping in a cave).

I bet the worst day you ever had was when someone sat in YOUR chair in the staff room.

Even if true, is that something to be proud of or aspire to?

That would make you in your 70s or 80s, then!

You'd think a man of that age would show a little more sense, wouldn't you? In fact, going by the way you carry on, I'd estimate your age at early twenties or younger.

And I did make it quite clear that it isn't something I brag about.

Now if we're talking about willy size...

You'd definitely lose. How many kids did you produce with your 'wonder willy'?

Sorry Joe, I'm not going to play your game. I prefer a more adult discussion.

You may, of course, have the last word if you like.
