The use of the word "drain" does seem a little unfortunate since there is an implication (perhaps?) of wastage, which is always going to provoke an emotional response.

Sadly, the biggest drain on the NHS, is the amount of "non medical" management jobs, it seems to have. Managers who are paid extortionate wages. Nowadays a doctor/consultant might tell you, you need an operation.. But,,, it's a man with a degree in accountancy and a suit and tie on, who decides whether you can have it. (and ultimately whether you live longer or die sooner)

The ambulance chasers also need to take their share of the blame. Hospitals are obliged to set aside a lot of money to cover claims for when things (inevitably) go wrong. I'm not criticising compensation payments for genuine and serious mistakes, but so many people these days are interested in getting every penny they can for the slightest of problems, and the 'where there's blame there's a claim' brigade do all they can to encourage it.

I had a fall in work on 10th December and fractured my wrist.
At the hospital there are cards/notices all over the place trying to coax you to submit a claim for compensation, regardless of how you injured yourself.
I'm just glad I was not more seriously injured and will not be putting in a claim.

My apologies if I caused any "raised hackles" with my question about elderly, NHS and "drain".
It wasn't a serious accusation or inference.
The postulation was merely thrown into the pot of "competing for resorces" as an example. I did (I thought) clarify that with my "Where will it all end?"
As I see it most of the apparently valid arguments against migrants are in that category of: There isn't enough to go round, so it needs to be rationed. Most of the suggestions here make argument for rationing those resources to migrants. But is that the most sensible? To be crass, wouldn't it make most sense, in terms of income per capita and other commendable criteria, to ration those resources to the least productive?
The migrants may not fall into that category.
Hence my question which I'll extend and specify more succintly:
When/if we've sufficiently rationed the current existing resources, according to today's criteria, but they start to become scarce again at some point in the future, (which they will) where will we look to next to ration those resources even further?
Or maybe there's another avenue; to reduce the untilisation of those resources by some strategy (reduction of birthrate, euthanasia, etc) I appreciate that my suggestions here maybe considered extreme, they are only suggestions thrown into a pot for stirring.
I've used italics for the apparently valid part to try to differentiate those arguments that are valid, from the excuses for cognitive biases. I haven't seen any data or factual evidence presented in these threads, for those valid arguments, just perceived emotions.
Let's not forget that our government have (no doubt about it) secret agendas which we may or may not know about for at least twenty-five years. We don't/won't know if they have any secret agendas in this area.

Perhaps better to leave this thread for a year and resurrect it on Jan1st 2015, when we will know (roughly) how many Roma's and Bulgar's have came here seeking work/benefits... Should be quite interesting,,,
Who would come up with a reliable figure?
Certainly, I wouldn't trust the government to provide believable figures, and I'm pretty sure no-one else would.
We need an independent body and the only one I can think of is a collection of all our free press of all parts of the political spectrum (for a balanced view).
I'm sure the real figures would be available, except for illegal immigrants of course, but I expect they would be kept secret by our democratically elected government!
I was wondering that as I typed my earlier post. We all know we can't/don't believe the government. (after all, if they organised a p**s up in a brewery, for the whole country, we'd all turn up at the wrong brewery)

Just had a letter from our council (quietly slipped through the letterbox on a Sunday morning) telling us that over the next fifteen years they will be building another 12,500 homes in our area - building over 4pc of green belt land.
The letter pretends that it is in order to provide housing for the children and grand children of the local residents although I doubt that very much. Also; it will somehow create 8'500 jobs.
Our area is already 'rammed' at certain times of the day and I doubt whether any new infrastructure is planned to cope with the influx of the so called 'local resident's children.' It is already impossible park in our town without another 12,500 cars on the way.
The letter also states that they will be providing a further 106 traveller pitches in the area.
Might be time to move I think.
