The government could actually stop the illegal trade in drugs if they wanted to, but there's no political will. Governments are usually the problem, not the solution.
I agree the govt could cut the ground from under the feet of illegal traders.

However the voters as guided by the likes of the Daily Fail wouldn't stand for it.

The US would also try to prevent it as they are still committed to Prohibition.

People in govt often know what needs to be done, but they don't know how to stay in power if they do it. Which is more important to them.

I worked for a member of the government a couple of years ago and we got around to talking about smoking. He told me that if the government wanted everyone to stop smoking then they could do it straight away by having a £25 tax on per packet. This would stop 99% of smokers, but he told me that no government would do that due to the fact they want the tax money they get from them. He also said that most harden smokers don't live long enough to collect their pension.

no, putting tax up to £25 per packet would encourage a thriving black market and pour money into the pockets of organised crime.

The tobacco industry recruits most of its lifetime customers by the time they reach their teens. They have to keep recruiting new young customers, because the old ones keep falling off the perch. I'm sure you've noticed that your oldest friends who were long-term smokers are the ones whose final parties you go to.

You can always recognise an initiative that is likely to reduce smoking, because the tobacco industry (including the Tory Party) opposes it vociferously.

I can only agree with what others have said. The government will never ban either tobacco or alcohol for two very simple reasons:

1. they'll lose a great deal of income via taxation;
2. they'll lose votes hand over fist.

Just a little anecdote. My mother in law decided to try e-cigarettes. She now happily smokes them AND just as many real ciggies that she ever did!

Whenever there is an initiative intended to discourage new people (usually children) from taking up smoking, the Pro-Smoking lobby works itself into hysteria and pretends that the government is banning smoking.

it's too late to help the die-hard addicts.

All we can do is try to discourage children, and help those addicts who are willing to try and help themselves.

Of course they should be banned. Just like tobacco and alcohol.

They are dangerous drugs Aron. Are you saying that heroin and Chrystal meth should be legalised? If not then why not? I bet it's the pesky Muslim's fault.

I see joe, so you want the terrorists to win do you, what about the victims of the london bus bombings, do their lives mean nothing to you, what would you say to their families?

It's a waste of breath talking about banning tobacco and alcohol. Salt is bad for us but it's impossible to ban it. Sugar is bad for us - arguably worse than tobacco and alcohol combined - but it's impossible to ban it. These things are too readily available and all the bans in the world won't stop people getting hold of it.

That's right. If you can't ban it, tax it!

You would die without salt, Quite painfully as well.

As to "to much" salt, recent studies show it could lower the risk of heart failure, or increase it, no one is sure now.

Sugar is bad for us - arguably worse than tobacco and alcohol combined -

Errr, no, just no.

I'd say that Aron is in favour of legalising Chrystal Meth and heroin. What that has to do with allowing tobacco and alcohol to be pushed on the streets I have no idea.

Just for the record Aron, are you in favour of legalising all 'class A drugs'? If not - then why not?
