Renting DVDs/Blurays

Just wondering what other people are doing for film rental these days since the demise of Blockbuster and all the local rental companies. As far as I am aware there's no one that will rent you an actual dvd. Plus all the online companies all require a monthly membership fee.

I really can't be bothered to go down the downloading route (don't fancy watching a film on the laptop) and I don't have a smart tv either.

Netflix and such like seems to be taking over.

You don't need a smart TV afaik.

All flat-screen TVs offer at least one HDMI port on the back for connecting to external devices, and the same is true for practically all laptops manufactured in the last five or six years. HDMI is by far the best cabled solution available because not only does it support Full HD (and beyond) signals, but you only need one cable to carry both video and audio from your laptop to your TV.

Good heavens, you don't want to pay good money to rent DVDs, do you?

Get a PVR and DVD/BD writer. I record anything and everything I think we might like from the TV, then copy to disc. I have well over 300 films. Believe me, when you are looking for something entertaining to watch just search through your stock, especially the ones you haven't watched for a few years, and you're sorted.

Especially if you have a poor memory like me.

Thanks JBR.

I'm not really into keeping films (although I do have a few favourites) but want to watch the latest releases just after they are done selling them. Blockbuster used to be ideal for that.

I appreciate that, Squeaky. I suppose I'm just a tight-fisted b*gger. I have, though, on odd occasions actually paid money for discs when the first wife insisted we bought a just-released film.

I believe you can rent films online, of course. 'Love Films', I think, is one example, although I'm not sure whether they do just downloads or physical discs as well.

I went with this option in the end. Joined Blinkbox which is owned by Tesco and I am now able to download the latest releases. The good thing is, there's no membership fee so I only pay for the film itself. Once downloaded (which is instant) you have 30 days to start watching it and once started you have 48 hours to finish or watch again.

Cheers!

I was using blinkbox, found it okay but as it is pay per film, two films a month made Netflix better value at 5.99 /m.

Yes, I did notice that it wasn't the best value over all but just didn't want the monthly fee. But thanks for your reply.

Problem with Netflix and co is that their latest films are just too old, they are the sort of films you would see for £2.99 in Asda.

If you have Netflix you can go into your settings and adjust it to access the US version, better but not great.

Showbox on the other hand, watch films before they go on the cinema

At the risk of confirming my tight-fisted attitude to money (I prefer the word 'careful'), can you record the film, say on to DVD, as you are watching it? I have a DVD recorder.

Not sure about that so far. I havn't really looked into it too much and have only watched one film but the film does not appear in the computer files. You have to go to their website. Blinkbox gives you the option to buy as well so I can't imagine they would allow it to happen.

Who knows though? If its on the screen then maybe it can be recorded.

I have bought tv programmes from Blinkbox.

If you buy them 'to own for ever' you can download them to the pc.

I haven't tried to record them to disk but assume you could or to memory stick.
