I've got 2 lights, both working from 1 switch.
I've replaced the lights with standard ceiling roses, but can't get both lights operating normally again.

Here's the wires coming out of the ceiling:

I'm ignoring all earth wires, but rest assured they are all connected up.

Light 1:
So, 1 and 2 are both red, but I've worked out as being the switch wires using a multimeter.
3 and 5 (Red) I've connected to "Loop" on the ceiling rose.
4 and 6 (black) I've connected to "N" on the ceiling rose.
1 and 2 are connected to "L" and "N" (I've tried both ways around, as I'm not sure which way around they go)

Light 2:
7 (red) I've connected to "L"
8 (black) I've connected to "N"
"loop" is empty.

Light 1 switches on and off successfully.
Light 2 is permanently on.

I've tried switching a few around....but no joy, and guessing not a good idea.

HELP!! :)

You need to use your multimeter to find which cable at light one goes to light 2.
The remaining cable will be the mains supply in.

Light 1:
Both blacks to N.
Red from Mains cable and one of the reds from the switch cable to Loop.
Other red from switch cable and red to light 2 to L

Light 2:
As you have it now.

If you connected 1 and 2 to L&N there will be a bang when you switch on! You may have destroyed the switch and blown a fuse/tripped MCB.
1 and 2 go between Loop and L
One of the wires 3 or 5 goes to L, the other to loop. If it doesn't work, swop them over.
Both blacks to N.

Spark doesn't the op show the wiring at both lights in the diagram, not 4 cables at one light?

Yes, sorry. I noticed and have edited it, thanks. I was thinking loop out but there isn't

OP
I cannot understand how the light is working when you have connected the switch across the supply?

OP .. I cannot understand how the light is working when you have connected the switch across the supply?
Given the absence of any reports of bangs or MCB trips, and the fact that we are told that Light 1 switches on/off satisfactorily, the OP clearly has not done that - so there must something wrong with his description!

The fact that Light 2 is permanently 'on' is obviously expected, since the OP has apparently connected it directly to the L&N supply.

Kind Regards, John

Ok, thanks for all the replies, it was very much appreciated! diynot to the rescue again.

All fixed now!
Took all wires out and redid them following advice above, and hey presto, all working nicely!
Used multimeter to work out which cable was "light 2", and it was also the red from Switch that had to be connected to Live where I was going wrong - my ceiling rose instructions didn't seem to show that.

No bangs or trips, but I don't doubt that my description could have been wrong.

Thanks again!
