UK PM Theresa May announces plan to call snap general election on 8 June

I don't buy your talk of direct rule, it's a straw man. The NI executive has an elected government, the direct rule approach WOULD have been to ensure there was no power vacuum, rather than some ulterior motive.

Nozzle
Yes, NI has an elected government which currently is at stalemate about First Minister appointment, and according to the GF agreement, if that stalemate is not resolved within a certain time frame, two options are available: another election or impose direct rule from Westminster. Which is why I think the UK GE is a cynical move to deny NI another election. Not the only reason for the cynical move.

What are the odds of lib dems holding the balance of power and forming a coalition with labour or conservatives and then pushing for a referendum on the brexit package ?
Here's hoping.(y)(y)

Poor old noseall doesn't vote. Just complains from the side lines.

It looks like, despite May's argument that there will be no IndyRef2, or rerun of the Brexit referendum, this is exactly what the forthcoming GE will be.

The Tories and Lib Dems will be doing exactly that, rerunning the Brexit referendum. Only Labour will be campaigning on other issues.

SNP will be basically rerunning the IndyRef2 , except it will be on whether the IndyRef2 should be rerun.

NI will be denied another election to resolve the current impasse in the NI Ireland assemble because it will be impossible to run a GE alongside another NI Assembly election, so direct rule will be imposed from Westminster. That will satisfy the DUP and other Unionists but anger the Republican parties.

Mrs May thought the country was settling down and the divisions only remained in Westminster. Now she wants to stir up the divisions in the country and disturb the settlement!

Alternatively, she wants a stronger mandate to deliver a softer Brexit than previously promised.

And she is refusing to participate in a public debate!

What a shambles!

It's times like this that I wish my area had a Tory candidate, simply so I could vote to shore up Brexit. Ah well. I will be voting for 'none of the above' by writing 'LIBERTARIAN' across my ballot (spolied ballots are counted).

As usual, the polsters are predicting a conservative landslide, with the lib dems getting back towards their last number, but as they've been wrong the last few times, can anyone predict this outcome acurately.

Labour voters will more than likely not bother to vote, and some brexit voters will swap to the the lib dems as a protest against a hard brexit, but as brexit is what the GE is all about, there's no precedent to judge it on. If the conservatives get in comfortably, then they'll go ahead with the boundary changes, and labour won't get back in to power for maybe 20 years; and as Kinock said, not again in his lifetime. Ukip might pick up 2 seats, but I doubt if the Greens will do any better than Caroline Lucas, but even she could get dumped as she a staunch remainer.

Northern Ireland will be allowed to reunite in a few years, and even though the Scotish conservatives will pick up more seats, Sturgeon will still push for another independance referendum.

And no matter how many people accuse TM of reneging on her promise not to call an election, it was the right thing to do, politically, to give her office a legitimate mandate, and to settle once and for all the direction the country is coing to take.

We are in for an intereting 7 weeks; most of which we won't agree on.

And her decision to refuse to participate in a public debate, preferring instead to 'knock on doors'.

Is speaking to one or two people at a time more effective use of time, or discussing with others, while millions of people can watch?
Or is she afraid of the topics/questions that will be discussed/asked, to which she will have no answers?
Kind of questions like, "What sort of Brexit do you think we can get?" "What is your plan for Brexit?" "How will Brexit affect the JAM's?"
