i wondering if any one can help me. We have just bought a electric fireplace and surround for our living room. We were planning on hard wiring it as we have a switched fused spur for fire on wall. We have just unpack fireplace and am a little bit confused it has this very strange plug see photo and cable is rediculously short only about 25-30cm long. Are we missing some thing what is the plug ment to plug in to. There was nothing else with it. What's the best way to wire it in. Can we hard wire it still and is it possible to extend the cable at all.

Are you sure there is not another piece included in the packaging somewhere?

That plug has a female counterpart which would attach to the mains via your FCU.

Was this bought brand new or second hand?
As above the plug connection should have a female connection as well.
The second connector would allow for it to be extended.
But it would be possible to buy a replacement connector, or alternatively rewire the flex to a full length without joints.
I assume it is just an electric fire, rather than an electric fireplace/surround?

Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated. It is a electric fireplace with surround it looks similar to the one in photo. Camera would not work this morning. Does this make a difference that it's a electric fireplace with surround not just electric fire. It is brand new.

There was definitely nothing else in packaging. I will contact shop I bought from this morning and will let them know a cable is missing.

Hmmm...... First of all those connectors are usually only rated at 10A maximum so are only really suitable if the fire is less than 2 kW. Even at 2 kW it will be running towards its maximum limit (not really ideal for extended use) and it is not rated high enough for a 3 kW fire.

Secondly, I've never seen a new fire sold in the UK like that, even one with a surround. Most come with a moulded 13A plug. So I reckon that it's possible that this suite has been sold before, someone has chopped off much of the lead and the 13A plug and fitted this connector to attach it to some existing fixed wiring. Then changed their mind for some reason, and decided to return it, and it has been resold to you.

I was thinking along quite similar lines, except my idea was there's a showroom somewhere using a system of those connectors to assist with quick changes of their displays...

It is brand new.

And tell them that they are breaking the law - that plug does not comply with the Plugs and Sockets etc (Safety) Regulations 1994.
