so I have brought a new light switch for my kitchen 9 replace the old one this is a 3gang 2 way plate switch.

After taking all the wires out and marking them on paper I have got myself in the right mess and I cannot for the life of me figure out what I have done

I have 5 red wires 2 small brown ones that are not connected inside the electrics (these were connected in the lady socket only) and I have an earth

Please can you help these lights are to switch on 3 different lights in my kitchen and nothing else but I am confused as now I cannot seem to get the lights to switch on at all

I have managed to get 1 lot to switch on/off but 1 is on all the time and the 3rd lot won’t switch on at all

Any idea

Not marking the wires is what you've done, and now you are going to have to get them identified.

Basically you're going to have to choose between Plan A and Plan B.

PLAN A:
PLAN B:
  • Get an electrician.
There are some irresponsible people here who will tell you that there is a Plan C, which is to start trying different things without really knowing what's going on, hoping to get it working by luck, or by blindly following instructions to put-this-wire-in-that-hole without any idea as to why. Please don't listen to them - you must know what, and truly understand what, you are doing.

Electrical-installation-by-guesswork is a foolish idea.

There is no Plan C for anybody sensible.

Odd that you've got 5 red wires in a 3 gang switch, where you'd normally expect 4, or 6. You haven't mentioned what type of lights you're connecting to, so we don't know how to advise you yet. You could have 3 live feeds, and three switched live feeds in the com connector, then going back to the lights from the SW1 connector, or you could have one live feed into the first comm, and then a strap to the 2nd and 3rd comm. So when you took the old switch off, where there wires going in and out of each switch, or how was it done.

Do you have a meter or mains test screwdriver to detect the live feed as a starting point. But you've got the earth right, so you've made a start.

5 sounds perfectly normal to me.
Line in, Line out, 3 x switched line. Can see from the photo that’s is 2-plated so 5 is fine.

If it was 3-plate there would be 4 or 6 reds.

Sorry, I though from the description that it was supposed to be a 3 gang switch.
