I heard that from a senior manager in a gas transporter company about 2 years ago. It may be that some new housing developments will not have gas available to them. Those developments already planned / approved should get gas but even that is not assured.

Trust me when I say this is bollorks. GAS Boilers along with gas in general is a multi billion pound global industry. Gas and gas appliances are not going anywhere.

It is getting more serious now. Few new blocks of flats have gas in them these days. The heavy insulation means they do not need gas. Point of use electrical hot water appliances/taps have also come along making matters easier. Electric UFH is cheap, easy and takes up no space.

Not so Bernard. It is cheaper to eliminate gas and also save valuable space for meters & large boilers in the flats and highly regulated space consuming ducting for mains gas pipes in common areas in apartment blocks. Money saved on gas installations can be used for heavier insulation.

The architects like the idea of no ugly external flues and discharge pipes. The lack of a gas installation and associated appliances gives architect more scope in design. The high insulation values means electricity is viable, as it will be used so little. Some rarely use the heating at all in new blocks.

In the end, gas will probably be reserved for industrial use and power generation until total close down. But a company wanted to convert all of the natural gas distribution pipework in Leeds to hydrogen gas. So, gas may still be with us, but I doubt it myself.

Same with Fuel - I deffo wont see it but my grandchildren will. I recon car ownership will return to the levels in the 50's 60's . Then the trucks that need to deliver goods will have free run of motorways etc. and kids will play in the streets(y) Now if we had a Socialist government, every council house would have solar panels, now.;)

The key is a solar panel and a Tesla Powerwall battery, or equiv. Free solar produced electricity is stored for use when there is no sun and/or peak time use. The Powerwall is viable not only with solar panels, but also using cheap economy 7 overnight electricity to charge up. But a Powerwall and solar really makes economic and environmental sense.

Might sound great in a lab,but in a 5 bed 3 bath house,or 6 student house,,,that is going to be 1 serious set up to supply hot water with no gas.

Not convinced of that,at all..having spent the last 5 years in a new,,ish flat.Things must have changed rapidly
I have seen some in London that are so well insulated none of the residents used the electric UFH heating system in the 1st few years I knew of the block. Architects can save by gas elimination, moving the money for gas installations to extra insulation. Talking to one architect he said the savings are quite substantial as extra space is released. This can be used for greater resident space or less space, but the same space given to residents, meaning less space to heat.

The figures pan out for normal homes. Student houses are more like small hotels.
