Roof tiles fallen down

Had a few roof tiles that have slipped and fallen down in the last few months. Just wondered, how are replacement tiles fitted when upper ones overlap the ones below ie are they nailed down but how do you lift the ones above them?

Also can they do this without scaffolding for the odd few tiles?

Some tiles are nailed but most will have a lug that sits over the baton. A roofer would probably do this type of repair of a catladder.

Not very susceptible at all. I live on a high spot for the area and not many of my clay (flat style) tiles are nailed. I have never had any come adrift for lack of nailing. Replacement of the none nailed ones is easy, you just ease a tool up under the tile, which unhooks it from the timber batten, so it can be pulled out and the replacement slipped in its place. I have done this myself on the easier to access tiles, but for the higher ones I call a local self employed lone trader roofer in. He uses a double extension ladder and a roof ladder to work from and rarely needs to spend longer than an hour on any job, so cost is low.

As long as the lugs are ok and so are the batons then it would be unusual for the tiles to come off, that said why have yours come adrift do you think?

Every course for us up in Scotland these days

It used to be nail every 3rd course including eaves, verge and ridge.
Although I think the specification for tiling has got stricter.
Maybe as stated in post above every course had now to be nailed and clipped.

Would depend on the age of the property, hard to find one on my origianl roof that was nailed down ,my new roof has every tile nailed down.

And then it will depend on how many nails the roofer had at the time I suppose or whether he could be arsed.
Not worth telling people how it will or won't be as there are too many variables to consider depending on the age of the property.

They (NHBC) are demanding that EVERY plain tile be twice nailed. If a roofer inadvertently breaks one now, can you imagine the fuss trying to get it out.

They will be impossible to nail any replacements,.
