Hi
I have an outside light by the front door.
Where do I stand if I spur this to a rcd switched socket placed under the eves (downstairs) so that I may plug in some Xmas led lights to run on the downstairs gutter.
It would be about 1 foot above the front door height wise.
Thanks
Nick

Why the RCD, not needed if your outdoor light circuit is already RCD protected.

How will the cable be run?

Get ready for somebody to lecture you about sockets on lighting circuits.

The on off switch is indoors about 2 foot from the light and another 2 foot from the house rcd.
The supply to the outside light comes out of the brickwork.
A socket so that I can plug and unplug the lights.
Ok, so the brickwork exit is only a few inches long and goes into the light via a block built into the light.
Could I cut and crimp?
Could I run cable into the same block? Down with a drip loop and then up into the eves?
Could I run this to just a junction box instead of a socket as it would be there over Xmas?
What type of cable would be best?
The light is a pir one. Would it’s capacitance or whatever cause a problem with the leds?
Any more info and counter argument appreciated

thanks
Nick

13 amp sockets on lighting circuits are bad practice. A junction box would be better or what about a 5A or 2A BS 546 socket.

Oh that is a really fantastic idea, why didn't anyone else think of that?

Can we still purchase 5A to 13A adapters so the wallwart that comes with the fairy lights can be plugged in?

One probably can on eBay :)

If he'd seen some of the things my grandparents had plugged into 5A sockets (which were what most of the few sockets they had were), he might decide to make his warnings/restrictions even more draconian!

Kind Regards, John

Shoot....apologies! I had not refreshed the page I pulled up before posting...

I do wonder if there was a traumatic experience that created Winston's phobia of 13 amp sockets on lighting circuits.

Ok. So the best solution goes to????
Also
Dusk dawn sensor might be good.

expecting more enlightening ideas. Did you see what I did there.. or even a simple circuit

I was born in a house with 5A sockets, 2 and 3 pin and moved when I was 6 to a house with 15A & 5A and yes I seem to remember an adapter of some sort in every socket.

I still have a selection as I am involved in public entertainment where BS546's are still the preferred options, so yes I can do 5A to 13A but it will most likely be 2 devices.

That's obviously not impossible, but it could also just be one manifestation of a generally 'very cautious' approach to life.

I think it fair to say that the same could be asked of yourself - i.e. whether your generally extremely risk-averse position is the result of past traumatic experience(s).

Kind Regards, John
