CH install - New Rads not heating - Need your help please

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the lockshield valves look like this:

If so, these are open a couple of turns at most.

The TRV valve:

This is open less in warmer rooms and more in colder rooms.

Yes, there is definitely no air in system as I worked from downstairs i.e. closest radiator to the upstairs furthest radiators.

Hope this makes sense.

He said he'll call back, but only if I pay him more money. I totally respect that people can make mistakes, but I hope you can understand, I'm not going to pay more money for his mistakes. I just wanted him to sort the problem out. Anyway I'll have to try and figure a way to find the cause and fix it.

I agree wholeheartedly, although I wouldn't say mad, I'd say he's a rip-off rogue trader. Hence my reasons to try and see if I could at least locate the cause of the problem.

The most common mistake is as discussed, connecting both ends to the flow or return, but if he tested as he said he would have realised

You could lift the floorboards and see exactly how the new pipework is connected.

What's the boiler make and model...presumerably it's a combi.

You balance a system by feeling the temperature drop across the pipes on each radiator not by whether a room is warm or not.

I suspect you have the lockshields open too much on the radiators nearest the boiler.

Getting loft radiators to work when they are furthest from the boiler (and on long lenghts of 15mm) is often problematic and requires careful balancing, by
that I mean some small radiators/towel rads may only need the lockshield opening an 1/8 of a turn...listen to flow with a screwdriver to your ear.

Come to think of it, I don't think he's tested it. Reason is that if he had, then when we came back from work, it would have been extremely warm in the house due to CH being on, combined with hot weather.

I'd really appreciate it if you can explain or maybe show me a diagram of what this mistake of connecting both ends to the flow or return looks like? It's just that then I can compare it with what my setup looks like.

Hi Gas guru - It's a vaillant ecotec pro 38kw.

I just want to eliminate that it's definitely not the flow/return issue that durhamplumber has mentioned before I pursue the balancing.

Pull up the floor and see how the pipework is connected...it will become immediately obvious.
If you turn off all the other rads the new rads should very rapidly heat up...that would confirm they have been connected properly.

Thanks gasguru. Can you also please tell me what does a one-way TRV look like vs a bi-directional TRV?

The photo I’ve attached shows what someone had done, connecting both pipes to the same feed (flow), and how it should be done.

Bi-directional TRVs have a small right angle symbol (with arrows) on the brass valve body....I have not come across one for many years and they haven't been sold for decades.
Uni-directional valves are only a problem when they are close to shutting down.
