Now, I know the principle of pressure washers. It's in the name really.

But I washed the car with it yesterday and it took paint off the tailgate handle.

I followed the instructions and the nozzle was no nearer than about half a metre. The instructions recommend no closer than 0.3m.

The paint was not fresh. In fact the car has 100% factory paint.

I'm pizzed off, but I'm sure the manufacturers wouldn't care.

Wrong tool for the job. You would have been better served with just the hosepipe.
Or sling a bucket or two of clean water over it.

The paint would probably have been damaged/corroded by the edge of the handle.

Pressure washer won't lift paint on a main panel, away from possible damage points.

When I used to wash my cars many years ago, on a Sunday of course. I always used a pressure washer with no ill effects. I think you got unlucky there. These days I find the rain doesn't hit the car too hard to damage it.
