Is the May 17th reopening a mistake?

Probably. The first cases of Covid announced locally were from somebody who when to the doctors surgery. Although no name was given, they and the doctors surgery were given a huge amount of abuse from locals - obviously nobody considered that they might not have known they had covid until they had been diagnosed. This was very early on, around the time we should have locked down!

For what it's worth, I've thought for a long time that a very large proportion of GP stuff could be dealt with on line or over the phone. Makes perfect sense to me. Not that I spend a lot of time at the docs myself. My wife is manager at the local health centre so the subject comes up occasionally.

I've heard similar. GPs often see people that just want to talk to them. And there's always the people that go there for every headache, tummy ache etc. that their kid complains about.

I suspect more people will eventually die from non 'virus' conditions than those getting a box ticked saying they died 'with' covid...
I predict that 100% of the people who dont die from C19 will die from something else.

Some stats for those out there that think covid isn't real, and that no more people are dying that usual.
Do you honestly believe that people who think like that are going to take any notice of facts?

"The number of people waiting for hospital treatment in England has hit a record high amid the coronavirus crisis.
An estimated 4.66 million people were waiting to begin treatment at the end of January, according to NHS England.
It is the highest since records began in August 2007.
The number waiting more than a year was 304,044 in January - the highest for any month since January 2008.
In comparison, the number in January 2020 was just 1,643."

I wonder how many of them will die from treatable illnesses?

Not as many as you probably think. A friend recently had a cancer scare (was cured a few years back) and he was seen and cleared immediately. Urgent appointments are not being delayed. Yes, long wait time for elective surgery, but I have not heard of problems with people not getting treatment that they needed, at least, nothing beyond the norm.
So maybe no need to wonder about that.

Of course, the sooner everybody is vaccinated, the sooner everything will go back to normal.

There are periods in the recent past when that has been true. Between 1st December 2014 and end of March 2015 40,000 people are recorded as dying from flu. That's 10,000 per month. Not a peep from the outraged press.

So the figures are wrong?

And how many waiting for 'elective surgery' will then develop more serious conditions?

From Cancer Research UK

"Cervical, breast and bowel cancer screening programmes are going ahead in the UK. But because of COVID-19, there are delays to some invitations and follow-up appointments.
The NHS has had to make difficult decisions. Screening was delayed last year to protect people from COVID-19. NHS staff who run screening programmes were also needed to support critical services.
Screening programmes have resumed. But there are now a lot of people waiting for screening tests and appointments. The NHS will try to reach everyone as soon as possible."

Of course, the sooner everybody is vaccinated, the sooner everything will go back to normal.
Do you really think it will be 'back to normal', or more likely a 'new normal'?

And what do you believe would that 'new normal' be?

Which is false. Go back and look at the press reports from around that time, there was a lot of press about it and how bad it was.

Indeed there was reporting...

"There were an estimated 43,900 excess winter deaths in England and Wales in 2014-15, a 15-year high"

"The majority of deaths (36,300) occurred among people aged 75 and over and respiratory diseases were the underlying cause of death"

But apparently so far this winter season (according to the latest data available) there have been no flu deaths reported, just from the 'virus'...

Kind of a familiar pattern?

So why wasn't the economy wrecked back in 2014-15 (more than it had already been) and draconian legislation pushed through 'on a nod'?
