Will this pass building control?

Un-bloody-believable! The beam will be heavier than the load it's taking. What a waste.
Imagine how I felt having to fork out 5K for the steels alone! Good to know though that if there's ever a hurricane and an earthquake at the same time we have somewhere safe to stand. o_O

I'm guessing the total load on the column is something like 10 or 12kN. The brick column itself will take quite a bit more than that so it's not going to fall over, but, well, just but!
I hear what you're saying. I was shocked too when I saw it. So even if it's crooked and not completely level you think that ultimately it will be safe?

BCO can't come out today, so sent them some pictures. Be interesting to hear what they say.

I'd have pulled that down myself last night and told him him it just fell over.

I'd also tell him not to bother trying to rebuild himself and either he finds a Brickie or you wait till his one comes back.

What's the point in rushing, at the end of the day waiting 10 days is better than being left with something sub standard for eternity, especially when your likely paying best part of 20k plus.

Do it once and do it right.

I have some insight in to these situations, you will likely find that Building Control will not want to say whether it is safe / up to standard or not. There are many codes / standards for brickwork etc and the burden of proof that the work is satisfactory is on you, not building control. You would need to get your own structural engineer in to determine whether it is safe / up to standard or not. They will then put together the argument to satisfy it has been built within the expected standards governed by building control. *edit* or to tell you its not safe and to rebuild.

Personally I would not accept that, and I see no harm in knocking it down thoughas it looks as though you will have only wasted half an hour of the guys labour !

He spent the best part of a day, maybe a day and a half on that.

Just heard his brickie is back tomorrow. Doubt he's 100% safe, but he'll be outside, so I'll take it! All the bricklaying he's done this far has been excellent, so will let him crack on with the rest.

I suspect the main builder now won't turn up and let he brickie finish. Might be an opportunity there.
 
Follow up question. If I have this rectified, how would this now be tooth bonded? There's no wall left to tooth bond to, unless you go around the corner and into rooms that are already finished and I really don't want to be touched.
 
I would assume stainless steel rods can be tied into what's left of the internal leaf.

Probably need to be resined into the wall
 
Well, that was nerve wrecking... but got a result. Not only did Building Control reply to me saying that they weren't happy with it, when I spoke to the builder he didn't put up too much of a fight. He agreed to take it all down again and have it rebuilt at his cost.

He arrived this morning with a van full of materials and most importantly: his brickie. The result looks a little different from what was there first:

I think that should inspire a bit of confidence in so far as a cowboy wouldn’t have agreed to redo it. Mind you, he has a proper subbie brickie and you may find he “had words” as in “that’s utter Shiite mate, knock it down and I’ll do it properly”.
