Is it likely that a smoke alarm with a 9v PP3 battery would be mains powered with the battery as a back up? Friend phoned to say that she is buying a new battery today and wondered if she should switch off at the mains before replacing the battery and I said that it would make sense. Left wondering though, do you get a mains powered smoke alarm which incorporates a battery as a back up?

Yes. Most (all) mains smokes have a battery as a back up. you have to slide the alarm out of its ceiling mount to change the battery - that automatically disconnects the mains.

It may just be a battery alarm with no mains connection. Depends on what she has.

Can anyone tell me how to remove this battery?

You may need to disconnect the mains plug with the 3 wires first.
Also check the expiry date on the label. The whole alarm may need replacing.

Looks like there’s more than one alarm. Probably they all are of the same age and
-if so- all need replacing.

Thank you for your input JW2, if only it was that easy
Apologies - I hadn't looked carefully enough - but when I did, it was pretty obvious that one would have to pull out the mains connector before pulling the red tape!

Kind Regards, John

As they say, “hope springs eternal”

Are you saying that ionisation alarms do not meet the relavent standards? Should they be banned?

Ionisation detectors are unlikely to be suitable in the majority of locations.
That's probably essentially true in terms of current thinking, but it's interesting how quickly views about what is "suitable" (or even "safe") can change over time - even though such devices are obviously no less "suitable" (or "safe") today than they were in the past!
