Jack Monroe to sue MP Lee Anderson

it will be interesting to see if the MP can substantiate his derogatory smear

"She’s taking money off some of the most vulnerable people in society and making an absolute fortune on [sic] the back of people.”

nobody on here has.

So no doubt he'd volunteer to swap places with a family 'just getting by' and invite the cameras in so he could show people how to make 30p meals day in day out?

Thought not!

Of course as has been mentioned the tories enjoy singing to their 'hate the poor' hymn sheet...

Another one today...

"Rachel Maclean, safeguarding minister in the Home Office, said families could “protect” themselves from the cost of living crisis by taking on more work, or simply moving to a “better paid job”

'Out of touch' by choice!

Why don't you watch the video where he does it?

Why is it hate to want to help people to help themselves rather than just making them more dependent on handouts?

If I was a person struggling to survive on 30p meals, I doubt I would be buying cookbooks.

I do, however, know how to access blogs for free at the local library or community centre.

And also to pick up books for nothing, or next to nothing, at charity shops.

Have you never been in financial difficulties?

Yes, but like the other guy says... I suspect if you were poor, you'd be the sort to bring batch cooked meals to work rather than ordering deliveroo Nandos.

If its possible that one poor person paid for or had their personal details mined and marketed as part of the promoted work and money went to the claimant, then there is truth that she/he/it makes some her living from the poor. As the accuser, she/he/it has quite a bit of work to do.

The video where he makes defamatory remarks?

Which is what the potential libel is about.

It is not about a disagreement on recipes.

Work such as:

Was it published?

Has it caused or is likely to cause serious harm to the reputation of the claimant?

Did he say it?

Is it true?

And so on.

Which of these are his supporters arguing about?

Arguing "she's a lefty" is not a defence

Arguing "she disagrees with government policy" is not a defence

Arguing "I do not approve her gender identity" is not a defence.

That's not the question.

Why is it libellous to make defamatory allegations about people who disagree with you?

Sec 3(4) - it would appear to me that she makes money from selling books targeted at poor people who need to cook on a budget. Given her deal with Penguin books, and her net worth from selling the books and the promotion of the website, the request for funding etc. etc. She does appear to make a fortune from writing articles aimed at people cooking on a budget.

Applying a bit of playground law - she seems happy to give it out
"David Cameron uses stories about his dead son as misty-eyed rhetoric to legitimise selling our NHS to his friends".

i wasn't replying to you. The discussion has moved on. I'm not interested in the potential libel.

Then you're on the wrong thread.
Or maybe you are with your laser like focus on the potential libel.

Particularly since the person that started this discussion moved away from the libel and into wider politics within a few posts.

No one argues that her books are aimed at the poorest in society. But she doesn't make an absolute fortune and has in the past donated a large fraction of her income to charity.

She had the temerity to question this MP when he said that food banks weren't needed and it was all down to people not knowing how to cook. So he's punching down.

The irony is that the material the food banks are using for absurdly cheap meals is quite possibly hers. I believe her book gets given away by some food banks. Les Anderson is criticising one of the few people that is making a positive difference.
