Brexit was never about trade. The subsequent trading problems are due to EU intransigence.

Brexit was never about trade. The subsequent trading problems are due to EU intransigence.

The EU are currently blockading goods travelling from Russia to Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave separated from Russia by Lithuania. Olaf Scholz is calling for the EU and Lithuania to relax these restrictions and allow Russia to move goods through the EU single market to Kaliningrad because because it's all part of their country.

At the same time Scholz wants tougher restrictions on the movement of goods between mainland Britain and NI (which is all part of the same country).

Britain’s GDP per head has grown just 3.8 per cent since the referendum, while the EU’s has grown by 8.5 per cent



The difference has become most pronounced since the UK formally left the EU in January 2020, a period which also coincided with the emergence of Covid-19. Both the UK and EU were hit hard by the pandemic, but the EU’s recovery has been more robust. As of the last quarter of 2021, the UK’s GDP per head was 0.2 per cent lower than before the pandemic. The EU’s, by contrast, had grown by 1.5 per cent
