Old standard! I have a pre war iron that belonged to my late mother with a brown earth wire. Not that it was ever earthed, she had a bayonet plug on it to go into the light!

In the good old days of tinned-stranded red and black, brown would be an "earthy" looking colour :giggle:

German appliances around the 1940's use Red for the Earth conductor, The Brown earth wire could have been originally Red that discoloured to become brown.

I still have a handy set
Good if you want to do the ironing in the loft and there’s no 13A socket on the lighting circuit up there!

Were they bare conductors that required red sleeving?

Some people on-line have made some mistakes. There aren't likely to be historical reasons for calling ALL colours EARTH-sleeving.

When I moved into this house one socket had a piece of black sleeving over one earth wire and a piece of red sleeving over the other earth wire. Whoever installed it apparently didn't have any sleeving and just used a bit of red and black stripped off the line and neutral.
