Be very careful who you have around your house.

In my opinion most trades are crap. There are more bad than good out there. I'm sure done will disagree.

Radiator didn't need to be upside down. That's odd..
Put radiator correct way up but could still put pipes in the top

Really?
How should it have been fitted, turn the radiator 180 degree around?
Will that work?

The country is going down the drain and the drain is blocked, it would seem.

Getting and keeping hold of a good plumber is a must, trouble is a lot of them seem to getting near retirement age.

Blup

It’s almost impossible to get a plumber in my area, or a heating engineer for that matter. All the plumbers where I live only want to do bathroom fit outs, all the heating engineers want do are boiler replacements

Then there is a market for a good plumber to fill that gap

Someone would have been paid money to do this

Go through gas safe register and look for a one or two man outfit. Give them a job like a boiler service and be prepared to wait 5 or 6 weeks. Then give them work regularly and you will build a rapport and will find they will give you more of a priority.

They’re decent hardworking people when you get to know them.

Always remember they are choosing you not vice versa

The days of the workman doffing his cap are long over, a little bit of respect goes a long way

That's what I've always said. The customer is judging me before they choose but don't realise I'm also judging if I want to work for them.

So best behaviour please

Yeah. 4 holes in rad all the same size
Think about it. Both pipes connected to the top, regardless of the radiator orientation, why would the whole radiator not heat up

For a very long time, the DIYer has had a reputation for bodging, scraping and doing a terrible job. The word "DIY" itself is often used as a benchmark of (poor) quality. Tools labelled as "DIY" or for the DIY market are likely to be crap. Jobs completed to a "DIY standard" also poor.

Nowadays, with so many helpful trades posting their work on Youtube (ok there's some crap there too but its all peer reviewed in the comments) and to ask questions on forums like this, the DIYer has no excuse not to do a top notch job. Ok, he's not a professional so he won't be able to do a great job in quick time, but time is on the DIYer's side. He can plan every detail and research thoroughly.

With DIY having the reputation it has does it mean we'll see less of the bodging sort as wifes and girlfriends will be less keen on their other half just "having a go" on a Sunday afternoon as might have been the case 20 years ago? So the ones that will attempt a job will be those that are 100% motivated to do a good job.
