I’m uneducated on DIY and decorating, so please hang in there with me.

But, long story short, we moved into a flat and when using a paint roller on the wall in the bedroom, the old paint literally fell off the wall! It crumbled all over the roller, peeled off the wall and exposed the plasterboard underneath. Why?!

Secondly, I have used Matt emulsion in the living room. It looked nice when we first painted it. Now it looks horrendous. It marks easily, there are fingerprint marks on the wall from where we have put our hands, it looks patchy. Why? What can I do differently next time?

Thirdly, and finally, the skirting boards were a horrible yellow gloss and I cleaned them up then I painted over them with a satin finish. Again, it looked nice when I first painted them but after it dried it looked like some of the paint had been removed in some areas, as if I missed spots and I hadn’t! I smeared on a thick layer so I don’t understand. It looks that bad my partner accused me of missing areas of the skirting out. What went wrong here?

Please dumb it down for somebody like myself.

Waterbased satin on woodwork needs undercoating.
I use a undercoat that has adhesion properties.
Then a acrylic undercoat
Then satin top coat.

Re emulsion.

Standard Matt is dry and pigment can crush. Marks easily.

Durable emulsion has pigment in the resin. Smooth. Can damp cloth over.

U might have a cold room and applying the emulsion in that case can lead to difficulty drying

I would leave it till the spring then as suggested use a durable matt like a soft sheen

Thin the first coat slightly to act as a primer sealer

Then put on undiluted 2nd and 3 Rd coats allowing a full day drying

Again with the skirting as said I would give the wood a light sand then wipe over

Once dry apply a coat of a specialist binding and adhesive primer .....

Crown PX4 , Zinser BIN , Zinser Cover Stain , Wickes Stain Block Primer

Then apply 2 x coats of your satin on top of these
