Hi,

I have some stair lights I wish to install, a mix of Emergency and Normal controlled by PIRs, no switch. I know this requires a 3 core (PL, SW, N) and earth.

I have wired my 3 core from the first light and round everything so far but still have to wire my mains. I was hoping to take the mains to the first light (normal fitting) but I would then have a 2 core incoming and a 3 core outgoing to everything else. What about that extra core at the first light? Do I have to take my mains from the board into the PIR first so I have a live in and out then away round the lights from there?

Thanks

No it doesn't need to go to the PIR first.

At this first light, permanent live from the consumer unit comes in and goes out as the permanent live in the three+earth cable. It gets to the PIR. When the PIR is on, it connects it to the switched live conductor in the three+earth and it goes back to the lamp.

Use 1 core as neutral 1 core as permanent live and 1 core as switched live and take a pir from any light fitting, no use having just 1 at the beginning.

If one looks at a standard wiring diagram

it does not matter if the switch is on the wall or a PIR, and the only change is if wiring multi lamps is 12 will have an extra wire to next lamp. In the main the emergency is a battery and inverter built into the lamp, often with fluorescent only one tube would be emergency.

But you have not said where the battery is, I suppose I could wire my lights to use the main UPS supply, I have not because of the drain if lights not required. And if using an emergency supply, it would need second line and neutral, as the inverter auto connects neutral to earth with a power cut, so neutral too would need second supply, that makes it rather complex.

So my incoming 2 core and earth (Feed) will connect as follows to my 3 core at my first light which is an emergency:

Brown (2 core L) to Brown (3 core PL)
Blue (2 core N) to Grey - (3 core N)
Earth to Earth
Black (3 Core Switch Wire) in a connector

Thanks

The 3rd core coming back from wherever the first pir is will turn the first light on

Well he's saying it's an emergency light, so maybe it's connected only to the permanent live?

I must admit, I would have to look up maintained and non-maintained every time to work out which was which. Just to remind myself, but as to the switched maintained, that seems to be a contradiction of terms.

I cut my teeth on the fluorescent light, the idea was needed a smaller battery to last the 3 hours, but with LED there are so many options, and I am not sure what is being asked for.

Them terms are now obsolete been replaced with codes.
The switched maintained was more popular with tubes, reason being to prolong lamp life by not having them lit 24hr and only when building occupied.
Sustained fittings have 2 independent lamps for similar reason not to deplete the lamp life of the emergency lamp.
